Muckraking thus seems to be an appropriate description of the consequences, if not always the intent, of this new style of critical research.
To be credible, muckraking research must respect the traditional canons of science and be judged by them, although it may not be inspired by the aesthetic contemplation of ideas for their own sake or the desire to advance an abstract body of knowledge.
Muckraking research may show various institutions where their failings are most visible and lead to window dressing (such as the symbolic fl in the front office) without basic alterations in patterns.

Muckraker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A muckraker is an American English term for one who investigates and exposes issues of corruption that violate widely held values, such as political corruption, corporate crime, child labor, conditions in slums and prisons, unsanitary conditions in food processing plants (such as meat), fraudulent claims by manufacturers of patent medicines, labor racketeering, and similar topics.
Muckrakers have most often sought, in the past, to serve the public interest by uncovering crime, corruption, waste, fraud and abuse in both the public and private sectors.
The rise of muckraking in the late 19th and early 20th centuries corresponded with the advent of Progressivism yet, while temporally correlated, the two are not intrinsically linked.

Bush's Muckraking Militarism Toward Iraq And Iran Is The Greatest Threat To Our Security
I don't believe there has ever been a more duplicitous excuse for muckraking against a sovereign nation with our nation's military than to justify aggression against those factions who are defending themselves against that aggression.
Now we are supposed to accept that the fearmongering liars in the White House who deliberately led America into war by lying about WMDs and terrorist ties to Saddam are, all of the sudden, amazingly credible in their accusations of "evidence" against Iran, who hasn't threatened us at all.
Bush and his muckraking militarism is the danger abroad which must be stopped in Iraq if there is to be any hope of normalizing the relations in the Mideast he has deliberately strained with his imperious invasion and his escalating occupation.

This bad news is coming on the centennial of a speech by President Theodore Roosevelt that defined a new form of journalism.
Wisely, though, Roosevelt noted that muckraking is necessary, but not sufficient: "The man who never does anything else, who never thinks or speaks or writes, save of his feats with the muck-rake, speedily becomes, not a help to society, not an incitement to good, but one of the most potent forces for evil."

 Muckrakers
The term "muckraker" was taken from the fictional character in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, a man who was consigned to rake muck endlessly, never lifting his eyes from his drudgery.
People in the United States had long been displeased with the unsafe conditions, political corruption and social injustice of the industrial age, but it was not until the late 19th century that the proliferation of cheap newspapers and magazines galvanized widespread opposition.
Most of the muckrakers were journalists.  Theodore Roosevelt gave the muckrakers their creative name.  He compared them to someone stirring up the mud at the bottom of a pond.  Progressives in Ohio and elsewhere used muckrakers' writings to...

 Muckraking: Three Landmark Articles
While historians have credited "muckraking" journalists with helping to inspire the reform impulse of the Progressive Era, Ellen F. Fitzpatrick questions the true impact of muckraking on the reform movements and the progressive politics that characterized the period.
By pairing her own commentary with three early examples of muckraking journalism (which were collectively published in the January 1903 issue of McClure’s), Fitzpatrick offers students a sample of the form while provoking readers to assess the degree to which such investigative journalism was an agent of change.
Along the way, readers not only will gain insight into some of the most significant industrial and political issues of the day but also will observe the extent to which Americans interpreted social change through certain traditional cultural values.
