  Mud Connector Introduction
Most of the muds you will find listed on the MUD Connector are indeed games and because of this we will try to introduce some of the more common forms you will find here.
The first mud was created by Roy Trubshaw and Richard Bartle at Essex University in 1979 (for those interested, the now obsolete predecessor to the C language, BCPL was used for development, with some assembly language routines used).
A resident may choose to talk with people in one of the many public rooms, hide away in one of their own private rooms, join a channel for discussion, or chat with a group of friends over the infamous friendtells.

But while the entrance - where we're given programmes, special fl bracelets, maps and bin bags (which all fall immediately in the mud) - is beautifully organised, the tepee village (an hour's muddy hike from the car park) is less so.

You follow these instructions and there you are, in a game with 100 other people, who are also sitting at home playing on the mainframe via their own micros.
The former is a description of the world, what will happen if people type certain things, and what will happen of its own accord whether you do anything or not.

 Elephant MUD People
Many people think they can just boot up a stock mud, make all their mates wizards, run around on a power trip for ages and sit back and wait to lap up the praise.
Muds only survive due to the commitment and enthusiasm of the people who run them, and at times I wonder how this small group of people can be so hostile to the people who give up their time to make it all happen, while claiming to care about the mud at all.
Elephant Mud is very rare in that it avoids these problems almost completely, and it is for this reason that our players stay for the long periods of time that they do.
