In the News (Sat 25 May 13)

  Obsession - Chapter 1
Draco had watched transfixed as the mudblood’s two front teeth started to grow past her chin, he stared at her, smirking, hoping that the teeth would turn in slightly and cut into her throat, he imagined the teeth slicing through her dirty skin, cutting through her flesh, her blood spilling everywhere….dirty, muddy, blood.
The next time Draco had seen the mudblood he noticed her teeth were better than ever, her beaver teeth were gone, replaced with a row of perfectly white shiny teeth.
Draco had obviously seen the mudblood before, he had been stalking her for nearly a year now after all, but that night was the first time he had gotten to see the real Hermione Granger.

The Use of the Word 'Mudblood' - The Sugar Quill   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
I have noticed that A LOT of people tend to refer to Muggle-born witches and wizards as 'Mudbloods' on message boards and in chats and the like.
The name 'Mudblood' seems to be, in a way, racist and VERY insulting.
I don't think saying 'mudblood' is offensive because these are not real people we are talking about because there is no such thing as muggle-born and half and half witches and wizards, so I see no reason why we can't use the word.

Chamber of Secrets - Did Snape See Himself as a Mudblood?
In my very-humble-could-be-wrong-opinion, I think that was Snape's worst memory because he liked Lily...and then, because he was horribly embarassed, he called her a mudblood, and lost all chances of becoming her friend.
I think he feels really ashamed about it---here she was, the only person to stick up for him, and he likes her (maybe even loves her), and then, just to save face, he blurts out the nastiest thing he can think of and pushes her away forever.
I can see--although I'd never thought of it--that "Mudblood" could have been a way of trying to make others see him and Lily as different, to keep her from being targeted with his brush, so to speak.

The mixed signal is, Hermione obviously despises being called a mudblood, yet she seems to have little problem with nonmagical people being referred to as muggles.
The upside to all of this is that even though regular people are called muggles, the good characters do not seem to harbor any ill will towards them and even pass various laws to protect them from magic.
January 2, 2005 01:58 PM My understanding of the usage there is that ‘mudblood’ has all these connotations that are at best classist and at worst a racial-purity thing.

John Kerry, though, is trying to pass himself off as a working stiff just like everyone else - thus our interest in Theresa's finances, assets, etc. Her morals, her relationship with her family, her vacationing habits - nobody's business.
When she attacks the president and vice president regularly and questions their intelligence and patriotism she is no longer a "civilian" and should not expect to be treated as such
I'd "heard" that she was leaving the campaign to John Kerry, simply financing it (as a good wife with cash would, if you ask me), and that's about it.

Indeed, the evil threat unleashed in the movie is a creature which will Kill "Mudbloods" thus driving them out of the Wizard's School (Hogwarts) and 'purifying' the school as it always should have been.
The thing about it was that the girl that was insulted and called a "mudblood" was Hermione Granger (played by Emma Watson)-she is about as white as you can get.

Harry does care about Hermione; he just didn't know what mudblood meant at first; plus Ron wasn't the one who reacted first, it was Fred and George who dove toward Malfoy and Alicia Spinnet yelled, "How dare you!" then Ron did the slug thing.

You are forgetting that the book was originally owned by Snape's mother who would of course have had a 'girl's writing'.
If asked at this stage in his life, I think Snape would have said a half-blood had three options, being an outcast on the same level as Mudbloods, being a lackey, or proving he was just as good if not better than any of the purebloods.

The Sun newspaper claim the sixth and seventh installments of J.K. Rowling's wizard adventures will be called Harry Potter And The Mudblood Revolt and Harry Potter And The Quest Of The Centaur - after discovering the titles had been registered as trademarks with the UK Patent Office.
They were mysteriously registered in July by a company called Seabottom Productions, who themselves were formed just days before and who share a London address with the British lawyers of Harry Potter film studios Warner Brothers.
Sources close to reclusive Rowling have refused to confirm the rumors - but fans of the global literary sensation are already beginning to speculate if the titles are true, or just an elaborate decoy.

I've never fully understood why this seems to be a source of so much confusion -- though I have noticed that there are some HP fandom sites that misrepresent this information, so perhaps that's why.

There are an awful lot of parallels between the two of them: both are nasty and sour, both single out Harry as the source of everything that goes wrong.
And both of them have forced themselves into an extreme caricature of a lifestyle, a lifestyle that attempts to shut out any trace of what they fear they might be: Petunia, abnormal (and possibly magic), and Snape, a Mudblood (and possibly nonmagic...hmmm, I wonder why he works so hard in school).
This is too important of a parallel to be coincidence; it is my opinion that Petunia and Snape (and by extension, Lily) knew each other growing up.
