Mullets have blunt snouts and small mouths with tiny teeth adapted for feeding on fine algal and detrital material of bottom sediments.
Mullet are often seen ejecting sand or sedement through their mouths and gill openings while feeding.
In the Homa Lagoon (Izmir Bay), of 5 members of the family Mugilidae, otolith characteristics are valued by using the Discriminant Analysis and it is found that the greatest similarity is observed among Liza aurata, Liza ramada and Chelon labrosus.

 Fishdisease.net :: Dr. Francinete Fonsêca
The present work had the aim to study the parasitism in fishes of the families Mugilidae, Centropomidae and Gerreidae occurring in the Santa Cruz Channel (7o 34’00’’- 7o 55’16’’S e 34o 48’48’’- 34o 52’48’’W) and at Suape area (8o 15’00’’- 8o 15’00’’S e 34o 55’00’’- 35o 05’00’’W).
In these areas, three fishes families are important: Mugilidae with the species Mugil curema, M. liza and M. trichodon; Centropomidae with the species Centropomus undecimalis and C. parallelus, Gerreidae with the species Eugerres brasilianus, Diapterus auratus and Eucinostomus gula.
The Mugilidae family counted about to 66% of the infested samples, outranking Mugil curema parasited by eight copepods being four Ergasilidae species, two Caligidae species, one Bomolochidae specie and one Pennellidae specie.

A fleet of gillnets of various mesh sizes was fished in the Patos Lagoon, Brazil, to investigate how measurements of a fish's body can best be used to determine the selectivity by gillnets.
Catch data were analysed for four morphologically dissimilar species: Micropogonias furnieri and Menticirrhus americanus (Sciaenidae), Mugil platanus (Mugilidae) and Brevoortia pectinata (Clupeidae).
Fish enmeshed at several positions along their bodies were used to elucidate the mechanism by which they are caught in relation to mesh size.

Phylogenetic relationships among four genera and nine species (Mugil cephalus, Mugil soiuy, Liza ramada, Liza aurata, Liza abu, Liza saliens, Liza carinata, Chelon labrosus, Oedalechilus labeo) of the Mediterranean mullets (Mugilidae) were investigated by means of allozyme electrophoresis using a seven-enzyme system (CK*, GAPDH*, G3PDH*, IDHP*, ME*, MDH*, PGM*) comprising eleven putative loci.
The highest genetic divergence was 1.299, detected between M. cephalus and L. aurata and the lowest (0.280) was found between L. carinata and L. saliens.
