Mugwump - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mugwumps were Republicans who supported Democratic candidate Grover Cleveland in the 1884 United States presidential election.
Mugwumps were often portrayed as "fence-sitters" with part of their body on the side of the Democrats and the other on the side of the Republicans.
The term mugwump may be read as a combination of "mug" and "wump", which means respectively the face and the backside (rump).

Under the circumstances, starting a third party to highlight the lack of a classical liberal alternative and to sabotage the candidacy of what was in their opinion the greater of the two evils may have been the most politically effective choice.
Joining the Democratic Party was, therefore, a pretty radical step for New England Protestant reformers of the Jerusalem-building variety but it paid off, as the Mugwumps were probably the deciding factor in securing the party's nomination for Grover Cleveland, a classical liberal with an unblemished record in public life (though with some personal relations issues).
That the Mugwumps refused to treat their, often distrusted, allies as "useful idiots" can be seen by the fact that the Anti-Imperialist League endorsed the hated Williams Jennings Bryan in the presidential race of 1900.

In a series of short chapters, he then explores the manner in which the Mugwump notion of political morality, most notably their determination to place the public interest over that of private or party interests was the common and consistent theme underlying their many reform efforts.
It was Wayland's influence, Tucker argues, that allowed the Mugwumps to chart their own course in the arena of public affairs, and to remain aloof from and independent of political partisanship.
Yet, he is largely successful in his goal of proving that the Mugwumps thought and action were guided by a highly articulated moral philosophy, and that in their own way the Mugwumps were trying to "do the right thing in American life and government" (p.

The Mugwumps, as the Liberals came to be known, are often perceived as a group of people deserving of approbation because they opposed the governance of patronage and corruption; in their own day, however, they failed to be enduring players in national affairs.
The Mugwumps were fed up with the decades of government fueled by dirty money and controlled by uncultivated opportunists; however, the reformers' haughty aristocratic nature prevented them from attacking the spoilsmen at the source of their power-- the people.
The Mugwumps needed a forum to convey their ideas in an appealing fashion, one that would not be dismissed by the general populace as yet another pretentious and verbose attempt to get back "in".

 Weird Words: Mugwump
Mugwump was brought into English in the early nineteenth century as a humorous term for a boss, bigwig, grand panjandrum, or other person in authority, often one of a minor and inconsequential sort.
Hence the old joke that a mugwump is a person sitting on the fence, with his mug on one side and his wump on the other.
There is also a slangy sense—less known these days, I believe—of a person who has been persuaded by his possession of a minor official position into a sense of self-importance, often becoming obnoxious as a result.
