According to sources in the orchestra, the management informed the players earlier this month that it would not be entering into any contract with Tang Muhai, who stormed out last August after a bitter argument with the orchestra's chief executive officer, Yu Songlin, over programming for the new season and budgetary matters.
Tang was quoted by an official Beijing newspaper as saying, "I shall not return as long as Yu Songlin is around."
Also discharged was the orchestra's deputy chief executive, Qian Cheng, a Tang supporter who manages the two largest concert halls in Beijing as well as one in Nanjing.

In September 1998 the Gulbenkian Orchestra was invited to perform a series of concerts in Chong-Qing (People's Republic of China), and in November of the same year made a tour to several cities in Germany and Switzerland, in both occasions under the direction of Muhai Tang.
In July 1998 the Gulbenkian Orchestra made a new recording for Deutsche Grammophon with Muhai Tang and the cellist Jian Wang (Haydn Cello Concertos), which was released in October 1999 to much critical acclaim.
Muhai Tang was Principal Conductor of the Gulbenkian Orchestra from 1988 to 2001.

Costumes, props and the boat in Act III were created partly for the production at the Megaron Concert Hall with the support of the Cultural Olympiad 2000-2004 organisation.
I saw the company's new and beautifully staged Der Rosenkavalier in January of last year, and felt that it had been seriously set back by Muhai Tang's conducting.
Whether Muhai Tang is just not suited to Strauss or whether he has difficulty managing large orchestral sounds in opera houses is difficult to say, but to my ear most of that Rosenkavalier's problems were present once again in this production.

When it was revived last Saturday it was a fitting tribute to Swedish-Canadian director Sonja Frisell that conductor Muhai Tang dragged her in front of the audience for a personal curtain call.
The FNO Orchestra was on top of their considerable form and Muhai Tang, who has sometimes been criticized for slackness, led his forces with unstinting precision, from the first heavy, ominous chords and all through the opera.
Maybe there was after all a slackening towards the end but that may be just as much Alfano’s fault.

Her crisp articulation also is remarkable, perhaps reflecting the influence of her former teacher, the celebrated keyboardist and Bach expert Rosalyn Tureck.
It's hard to judge much of the contributions of the Lisbon-based Gulbenkian Orchestra, or even those of conductor Muhai Tang, who seems to be pretty much following Isbin's lead.
The sonic quality of the recording is sharply divided; Isbin is miked crisply and brightly but the orchestra is distant, dark, and dim.

Klein, principal oboist of the Chicago Symphony, was one of the soloists who received the award for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance (with Orchestra) for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Teldec Classics recording of the Strauss Wind Concerti.
Rouse, a Pulitzer-prize winning composer, won Best Classical Contemporary Composition for his Concert De Gaudí for Guitar and Orchestra, which was recorded by guitarist Sharon Isbin, conductor Muhai Tang, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra on the Teldec Classics label.
The awards ceremony was held February 27, 2002, in Los Angeles and nationally televised.

These aren't easy pieces for performers to get their minds around.
Both Isbin and conductor Muhai Tang make music - as best they can in the Dun, and brilliantly in the Rouse.
Despite my obvious dismissal of the Dun, the Rouse alone justifies the money I spent.
