Sharif was born in Lahore, to a family of Kashmiri immigrants who settled in Punjab in the late 19th century, the son of Mian Mohammad Sharif, then the owner of a relatively modest cast-iron parts business who later became a prominent industrialist and later a joint owner of the Ittefaq Group of Industries.
