Muhammed Latif - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The city of Fallujah was handed over to former Baathist Major General Muhammed Latif, replacing n earlier choice, Muhammed Saleh, who was discovered to have been involved in the earlier atrocities against Kurds during the Iran-Iraq war.
Latif was granted the right to raise an army of 1100 soldiers known as the Fallujah Brigade, who would wear their Baathist military uniforms and control the city which US forces had proven unable to pacify.
Within days, the city's mayor, Muhammed Ibrahim Al-Juraissey said that there was a visible difference as the city began to calm now under Islamic leadership once again.

But when famed Turkish musician Latif Bolat began to stroke his Baglama - a Turkish string instrument similar to a banjo - before a silent and relatively diminutive American audience last Saturday, his Medieval Sufi music music seemingly took precedence over religious differences.
Latif gives expression to the varied cultural influences in his choice of instruments, combining traditional Turkish instruments with those of other cultures, such as the piano, Western flute and Indian tabla.
The recording, however, is not merely a curiosity or interest to just the ethnomusicologists, but should be a valued addition to the collections of all lovers of the earth's music.
