Mujibur Rahman was assassinated three and a half years after he led East Pakistan to independence from West Pakistan through a bloody war of liberation, which was in effect a firm rejection of the "Two-Nation Theory" of Mohammad Ali Jinnah (this theory led to the Partition of India in 1947).

The borders of Bangladesh were set by the Partition of India in 1947, when it became the eastern wing of Pakistan (East Pakistan), separated from the western wing by 1,600 km (1,000 miles).
Despite their common religion of Islam, the ethnic and linguistic gulf between the two wings, compounded by an apathetic government based in West Pakistan, resulted in the independence of Bangladesh under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1971 after the bloody Bangladesh Liberation War, in which it was supported by India.
It agitated for autonomy in the 1960s, and in 1966, its president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was jailed; he was released in 1969 after an unprecedented popular uprising.

This confirms what we already knew: that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman wanted to reach some kind of an accomodation with Pakistan, but certain political and military elements (fueled by anti-Bengalee sentiment and a fuedal mindset) within the government were steadfastly opposed.
