The townsite of Mukinbudin was officially gazetted in 1922.

 Walkabout - Mukinbudin
By 1910 wheat was being grown and by 1922 the town had been gazetted.
Today the Mukinbudin Shire Council services a town with a population of about 400 people which, in turn, services a rural community of about 400 people.
The nature of the agriculture in the area was neatly revealed by the 1981 census which found 931 people were living with 147 000 sheep.

The remains of tropical cyclone Vance which devastated the Western Australian towns of Exmouth and Onslow then moved over land causing heavy rain in the Goldfields of Western Australia and moved into the Great Australia Bight during the morning of the 24th.
A duststorm affected most of the western settled area during the afternoon of the 24th with visibility being reduced to 50 metres in parts of the Eyre Peninsula.
Western Australia recorded the highest wind gust on Mainland Australia at Learmonth on the 22nd with 267km/h as a result of tropical cyclone Vance.

 Walkabout - Trayning
The town came into existence in the late 1880s with the movement of prospectors and fossickers through the area on their way to the goldfields.
It is said that the word 'trayning' is a corruption of the Aboriginal words 'dur-iring' which, according to local folklore, meant 'snake in the grass by the campfire'.
In the surrounding area are some gnamma holes (ask in the town for directions), some unusually named granite outcrops including Billyacatting Hill (on the road to Mukinbudin) and Kodj­Kodjin which was originally known as Codgy­Codgy - surely one of the strangest and most amusing names ever given to a town in Australia.

The Mukinbudin area was first settled in 1867 by pastoralists looking for new grazing country.
The first Chairman of the Mukinbudin Bush Nursing Post Scheme was Mr H J Shadbolt, who served in this capacity for 37 years, from 1936 to 1972, and the first Nursing Sister was Sister E Needham, who commenced duties in April 1938.
It serves a population of 800 within the Shire of Mukinbudin, which covers an area of 3415 square kilometres in the Central Wheatbelt region of Western Australia.

NEWROC comprises the shires of Korda, Mt Marshall, Mukinbudin, Nungarin, Trayning, Westonia and Wyalkatchem and is working in collaboration with the CSIRO, University of Western Australia and a range of other experts in addressing salinity.
