MUKTSAR: Though they spoke from separately organised conferences, political and religious leaders reached a consensus of sorts to pay glowing tributes on the occasion of the tercentenary of the martyrdom of the 40 "muktas" (liberated ones) associated with the life and struggle of Guru Gobind Singh.
He said that today's public function was in line with the celebrations of 500th birth anniversary of Guru Angad Dev, quadra-centennial of installation of Guru Granth Sahib in Harimandir Sahib (Golden temple), and tercentenary of the martyrdom of the `Sahibzadas' (sons) of Sri Guru Gobind Singh last year.
He said that a Rs.1.91-crore Mukte-e-Minar was being erected in the shape and design of 60 ft high `Khanda' (type of sword) having 40 rings depicting the supreme sacrifice of each martyr.

Muktsar is also known for the Maghi Festival and Punjabi Jutti.

CHANDIGARH, OCT 17: The move of the Parkash Singh Badal government to transfer 117 villages from Ferozepur district to Muktsar district will not only checkmate the ranks of the mainstream Opposition but also ``greatly benefit'', by way of administrative expedience, the people inhabiting these far-flung villages on the borders.
While most of the panchayats of the 117 villages spanning the Assembly constituencies of Abohar and Baluana are reported to have passed resolutions favouring the transfer, the government has put the move on hold for the time being.
If these villages go to Muktsar, the local monopoly of the Jakhar family would have to face stiff competition from within the Congress -- Jagmeet Brar and former CM Harcharan S. Brar -- as well as from the well-entrenched Badal clan.
