The Kingdom of Kent was a kingdom of Jutes in southeast England, one of the seven traditional kingdoms of the so-called Anglo-Saxon heptarchy.
There is evidence to suggest that Kent and its boundaries relate to this British canton because it was handed over in entirety to King Hengist by treaty during the middle of the 5th century.
Kent seems to have had its greatest power under Æthelbert at the beginning of the 7th century: Ethelbert was recognized as Bretwalda until his death in 616, and was the first Anglo-Saxon king to accept Christianity, as well as the first to introduce a written code of laws.

No mention is made in the Chronicle of Mul's rule of Kent, but a charter of the Kentish monastery of Minster-in-Thanet (S 10) notes that Mul granted an estate as king of Kent.
It seems likely that the attack of 686 resulted in Mul being placed on the Kentish throne, where he ruled for a year or so until the people of Kent rose up and burnt him alive (the "twelve others" were presumably Mul's West Saxon advisors).

Following Eadric's death or deposition in 686, Kent became the battleground of a number of usurper and client kings, subject to the power struggles of Mercia and Wessex.
His support for the church became most evident in his decree, probably issued in 708, that the church should be exempt from taxation, a principle that was subsequently taken up by other kings and remained fundamental in English law.
Having established an enviable authority Wihtred settled down to rule Kent during a period of continued prosperity.

Unsurprisingly, one of Cædwalla's first acts on becoming king in Wessex was to take another (presumably larger) army and ravage Sussex again, conquering it completely, and also the Isle of Wight.
When the people of Kent burned Mul with his twelve Mercian advisers, Cædwalla returned in 687 and ravaged Kent again.
It comes as quite a shock to a modern observer that after this short and bloody reign, Cædwalla should retire in 688, go to Rome, and be baptised there by the Pope (on 10 April 689, the Saturday before Easter Sunday).
