After viewing Mule Skinner Blues I came away realizing that it was not like many documentaries that I have seen before.
This helps to show that this is how Beanie really is. That footage was not shot by the director so we know that it is not influenced by his ideas; it is from the real authentic point of view of the character.
All in all I enjoyed Mule Skinner Blues - I feel that it has the potential to change the documentary film genre because of the way it used elements of fiction filmmaking.

Mule Skinner Blues - Movie Review
Mule Skinner Blues is one of those clever ideas that rarely gets captured in a documentary form because it could so easily be taken for a fictional account, and as a feature film it would easily be tossed aside as old hat.

It is not, I repeat NOT, about Jimmie Rodgers (who wrote the song "Mule Skinner Blues") but it does contain...a less than definitive rendition of the tune by one of the denizens of the Florida trailer park who populate this bizarre little film.
Mule Skinner Blues tells the story of the making of the film, and provides insight into the lives of the dispossessed, down-on-their-luck, wacky bunch of trailer dwellers you'd ever want to meet.
Mule Skinner Blues is utterly charming and it's due to the naivete and openness of the people.

NYPOST.COM Movie Reviews: TRAILER-PARK DREAMER FINDS HIS INNER GORILLA By MEGAN TURNER
THE boisterous and daft documentary "Mule Skinner Blues," about a motley crew of trailer park denizens banding together to make a schlocky horror movie, is very funny.
It's also heartbreakingly sad, but, thanks to the deft touch of New York filmmaker Stephen Earnhart - who admirably resists the temptation to mock his subjects - there's an uplifting thread of optimism running through it, too.
If all this sounds contradictory, that's because "Mule Skinner Blues" practically defies categorization.
