Book of Mormon Evidences: Mulek, Son of Zedekiah   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Mulek is a nickname derived from melek (Hebrew, king), a diminutive term of endearment meaning "little king." Its longer form occurs in the Bible as Malkiyahu (in English, Malchiah), meaning "Jehovah is king." Malchiah is identified as "the son of Hammelech" in Jeremiah 38:6.
It may be possible that Mulek's description as a "son" of King Zedekiah in Helaman 6:10 and 8:21, as well as the apparent reference to Malkiyahu (Mulek) king of the son in Jeremiah 38:6, might not refer to a direct biological relationship.
Whether Mulek was sent to Egypt as a royal messenger or ambassador or in an effort to ensure his safety, it is unlikely that he could have taken all of his possessions with him to Egypt.

The further west Mulek’s party traveled across North Africa, the shorter the sea voyage would have been, so that a port west of the Straits of Gibraltar, on the coast of modern Morocco, would have spared Mulek’s party a complicated sail across the Mediterranean.

“The reference to the city of Mulek as "one of the strongest holds of the Lamanites in the land of Nephi" is puzzling because the city of Mulek is evidently located in the greater land of Zarahemla.
The city of Mulek is in Nephite territory, but not the “land of Nephi.” This error is a slip in writing what was intended (John L. Sorenson.
It is possible that the mental construction of the phrase should have been: “the city of Mulek, which was one of the strongest holds of the Lamanites in the land of [the] Nephi[tes].” The slip plays on the word “Nephi” and therefore depends upon the interchangeability of Nephite territory and the land of Nephi.

Omni 1:2 I of myself am a wicked man
The people of Zarahemla are often referred to as “the Mulekites.” Although this term is not used in the Book of Mormon, Mulek was the son of Zedekiah who accompanied his people to the promised land, and his descendants were the people of Zarahemla.
Mulek and his people left at the end of Zedekiah’s reign, about 11 years later.
However, the fact that he was a contemporary of the Mulekites, means that there was a time period after the arrival of Mulek’s party, when all three groups, the Nephites, the Mulekites, and the Jaredites, were living in the Americas without knowledge of each other.
