In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  4WD Project Mulgara
Project Mulgara (1994-1997) was to select a Light Surveillance and Reconnaissance Vehicle (LSRV) for the Australian Army going into the 21st century.
Mulgara called for an unladen weight of about 1.5 tonnes, a payload of 1.2 tonnes - all up 2.7 tonnes.
This is a tough task indeed as the lightest of the army's current four wheel drives, the 4x4 Perentie, has a payload of up to 1.2 tonnes but on an unladen weight of 2.2 to 2.4 tonnes.

In the mulgara example, the prior information obtained from an observational study increased confidence that there was an adverse effect of experimental habitat manipulation on the species.
The results suggested that the capture rate of mulgara was reduced to approximately one-quarter by reduction of vegetation cover.
In the European dipper example, prior information based on the body mass of the species and estimates of annual survival of other European passerines was shown to be worth between 1 and 5 years of mark–recapture field data.

This study investigates the effect of cover reduction on the mulgara, Dasycercus cristicauda, a small marsupial classified as vulnerable to extinction, which occurs in areas of central Australia dominated by hummock grasslands.
Loss or degradation of spinifex has been implicated in population declines of this species previously, but the importance of cover in maintaining quality habitat remains speculative.

The Department of Defence today announced that the proposed procurement of an Army light surveillance and reconnaissance vehicle, known as Project MULGARA, would not proceed, because of the need to strengthen combat capability by seeking more capable armoured vehicles.
Project MULGARA, which began in 1994, sought to provide Reserve armoured units with a vehicle that was simple to operate whilst still allowing the units to carry out operations in short warning conflicts.
The industry responses to an Invitation to Register Interest for the project made it clear that the proposed vehicle would not meet future Land Force needs, as it lacked flexibility and capacity to do a range of tasks.
