It is bounded on the north by Alaiedon Township, on the east by Ingham Township, the south by Leslie Township, and west by Aurelius Township.
The first settlement in the township was accomplished early in 1836 in Sections 29 and 30 by embers of the Rolfe family; hence, the name of "Rolfe Settlement." Ira Rolfe was the first farmer, in early 1836.
Portions of the township are level; notable in the southern part, and in the east and north along Mud Creek and Sycamore Creek the surface is rolling and hilly.

Stretching from the Little Traverse Bay area of Lake Michigan to Cheboygan on Lake Huron, it was first used by Indians for fishing, hunting, and canoe transportation - later for their access to fur trading on Mackinac Island.
In the center of this transportation route is Tuscarora Township, which includes Indian River and portion of both Mullett Lake and Burt Lake.
One of the accounts states that at the request of W.M. McArthur the township was named after the New York State tribe of Indians by the name of Tuscarora.

In this matter-of-fact fashion he noted an event that changed the history of Michigan and its Upper Peninsula and proved to be of monumental importance to the United States.
When Burt came to Michigan Territory in 1824 little was known of the lands in lower Michigan above the third tier of counties.

The glaciers of the last Ice Age retreated to the north some 25,000 years ago, leaving behind the lakes that rank as Michigan's most notable and geographical feature.
Among the state's largest inland lakes is Burt Lake, named after William A. Burt, who, together with John Mullett, made a federal survey of the area from 1840 to 1843.
By following the Cheboygan River, Mullett Lake, and Indian River to Burt Lake, then up Crooked River to Crooked Lake, Indians and fur traders had only a short portage to Little Traverse Bay.
