MAGNA CARTA RECORDS > Artists > JAMES LaBRIE'S MULLMUZZLER
And Mullmuzzler 2, as the title suggests, is the follow-up to a debut ('99's Keep It To Yourself) that quickly became one of the most highly regarded albums ever released through the Magna Carta label.
Keneally is indeed yet another deadly weapon on Mullmuzzler 2, matching LaBrie's versatility with a bewildering selection of styles, aggressions and seldom heard guitar tones, underscoring the record's fierce creativity, a work ethic that bubbles and boils and roils beneath these elegant wide-angled tracks.
Mullmuzzler's new CD on Magna Carta is Mullmuzzler 2, preceding by 1999's popular and critically-acclaimed Keep It To Yourself.

 MAGNA CARTA RECORDS > Reviews > MULLMUZZLER 2 - James LaBrie's Mullmuzzler
Mullmuzzler first celebrated the talent of vocalist James LaBrie apart from his groundbreaking progressive main course, Dream Theater, with Keep it to Yourself (1999).
Mullmuzzler 2 is a two-fold accomplishment, because it differentiates itself from LaBrie's other music and because that uniqueness lets it stand apart from the countless other offerings in this genre.
He is on the right track to build a strong solo career, and his Mullmuzzler has emerged as one of the best new progressive bands and surely one of the best Dream Theater side projects.

I mean, this is the guy who's cursed us with the cheesiest Dream Theater song of all time, "Anna Lee." Thankfully, Mullmuzzler is far removed from that sappy ballad.
Predictably, my two least-favorite songs on this disc are the ballads, "Sacrifice" and "Slow Burn." They're not bad songs ("Sacrifice" does approach "Anna Lee" cheese territory), but they pale compared to the rest of the disc.
The general sound on Mullmuzzler is kind of prog-lite.

Mullmuzzler's trips into the tunnel of love may have been awfully banal had the vocals not brought them up a few notches.
Don't be fouled by the "solo album" tag since there is plenty of room for each musician to display their skilled musicianship and add their creative input in the songs.
This is understandable, since Mullmuzzler gives him the chance to do things he can't do in DT and experiment with new musical ideas.

Mullmuzzler: Shadow Gallery came about because during the tour for Falling into Infinity, I was contacted by Magna Carta to do a guest spot on their new album, Tyranny.
Mullmuzzler: Well, right now I'm doing many interviews for the promotion of Mullmuzzler and beginning in the next couple of days we'll be doing both Mullmuzzler and DT interviews for promoting both.
Mullmuzzler: Just like to say that generally speaking DT has been overwhelmed with the loyalty our fans have shown us over the years and continue to do so.

The Canadian frontman of progressive metal darlings Dream Theater is known to everyone in the scene and has become one of the most imitated singers by new prog metal acts as the years have gone by.
And I think that we also had a bit more time with the process and had the chance to internalize and establish the songs longer, just to make sure that what we were hearing was what we wanted.
But I've had so much fun with Mullmuzzler and am so proud of it - I think we got two great albums - that I think at this point I'd be silly to stop.

Such is the case of MullMuzzler One the one hand, this band is not really a band, but James LaBrie (Dream Theater) working solo.
The term was LaBrie?s creation for a term to refer to gagging or silencing ?an individual's thought before it can be expressed in any manner?, as he described it.

While Steve was as impressive as you would expect, just as impressive were his bandmates, specifically Mike Keneally on guitar and Mike Mangini on drums.
Both are members of James LaBrie's latest project "Mullmuzzler." After the show both Mikes were kind enough to sit down with us and answer some questions.

When it came time for Mullmuzzler 2, the band’s moniker was not the only immediate change for the better.
Upon completion of the Mullmuzzler album, LaBrie says it was time to jump into the studio again for Dream Theater's upcoming double album, which is due out in January 2002.
Obviously touring with Mullmuzzler didn't fit into his schedule this fall, but once he returns from the twelve to fourteen month tour that Dream Theater has planned for the new year, he hopes to pull off a short run of Mullmuzzler dates in the states, possibly ten shows random performances.

The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Mullmuzzler 2
I like Dream Theater - I've got all the albums, a couple singles, and everything put out on solo (except all those miscellaneous Jordan Ruddess albums.) I even have Winter Rose, that little known James La Brie vehicle from the 80's.
Only two songs really show that Mullmuzzler can completely escape from Dream Theater - "Falling" and "Believe" are very far from their counterparts on Falling Into Infinityand Awake.
I find it interesting that Mangini, Keneally and Beller aren't mentioned when LaBrie discusses the composition phase on his website - the remainder of the artists are all staples of the Magna Carta catalog; Trent Gardner, Matt Guillory and others have been repeatedly criticized for "ripping off" Dream Theater.

On Mullmuzzler 2, James LaBrie pretty much repeats the formula that made, "Keep it to Yourself," work so well.
Whatever the cause, "Mullmuzzler 2" is a more cohesive album than its predecessor.
The album ends on a grinding note, with a thoroughly sick-of-it-all person declaring, "I don't care how the story goes/Just tell me how it ends." Set to a hard, somewhat industrial-edged soundtrack, "Tell Me," gives a hint of the direction "Dali's Dilemma" was supposedly going before they disappeared off the musical map.

For LaBrie, Mullmuzzler is the group with which he can try new things, get away from Dream Theater's trademark sound.
For the most part, Mullmuzzler eschews heavier prog metal, but in LaBrie's chest beats a heart of prog, because he still can't resist those proggy bits.
All in all, if you think of Mullmuzzler 2 as Dream Theater "lite," you won't be far from the mark.

Mullmuzzler II is an extremely rhythmic CD with a slight jazz feel that never quite reaches jazz.
