MultiFinder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MultiFinder was the name of a piece of extension software for the Apple Macintosh, introduced in System Software 5 in 1988 and included with System Software 6.
MultiFinder was an obvious response to the needs of users, but it had an interesting history.
While MultiFinder as a separate entity disappeared after System 6, its legacy remained in the System all the way up to Mac OS 9.

If MultiFinder were selected, the Finder and its functions continued to run when an application was launched.
The MultiFinder environment allowed users to see past the windows of running applications to view Finder icons such as the Trash, or the windows of other applications running in the background.
MultiFinder by default ran desk accessories in a special application called DA Handler, since the Finder's heap was not resizable.

 Apple Talks About Multifinder
MultiFinder saves time normally spent switching between applications by allowing more than one application to be open at once.
With MultiFinder, cutting and pasting from one application to another is fast and easy, since both can be open at once.
MultiFinder is an integral part of the Macintosh Operating System, is compatible with most current Macintosh applications, and can be turned off if it doesn't work with an application.

The Macintosh, since System 7.0 (May 1992), uses an operating system that was once called Multifinder, but is now just called Finder.
At some point, Apple introduced Multifinder, a desktop program that allowed you to have multiple programs running at the same time (this is not multitasking, which is the ability to have two or more programs using the Central Processing Unit, or CPU, at the same time.
Multifinder (Finder) is the only way that System 7 can run.

The only thing that prevents MultiFinder from switching in this situation is if the frontmost window is of the dBoxProc type, which MultiFinder associates with modal dialog boxes.
MultiFinder will also switch if we click on a visible window belonging to a different application.

Under MULTIFINDER an application is given a block of memory based on its profile.
If MULTIFINDER cannot get the memory required it will use the SUGGESTED MEMORY SIZE which usually is the minimum required for the application to run correctly.
You may have lots of memory under MultiFinder but still experience application memory problems unless you correctly customize the applications, for your workload.

For a long time, there were multiple, independent versioning schemes in effect for system components: a System Software Release, a System Version, a Finder Version, a MultiFinder Version, a LaserWriter Version, etc. Eventually there were attempts to unify these versions.
Initially included as a separate piece of software (along with the original Finder), MultiFinder soon became non-optional.
Note that while the Unix processes ran with preemptive multitasking, the Macintosh MultiFinder still did cooperative multitasking.

 MultiFinder Icon Fix
Presumably MultiFinder was drawing the ugly menu bar icon, or at least patching the Menu Manager to do its dirty work.
First of all, it would be a lot of work -- I’d probably have to disassemble it, and I neither own a disassembler nor enjoy reading undocumented code.
Further, its argument is a bitmap, rather than a handle to an icon, which would make it difficult to determine whether or not the bitmap was an application icon.

Why System 6 for Mac IIs?
A: With the introduction of the Mac Plus in 1986, it became economical for people to buy and use Macs running 1 MB of RAM or more.
MultiFinder effectively replaced the original Mac Finder, because the Finder did not support multitasking.
With the extra memory installed, applications and files that were 1 MB or larger in and of themselves could be used.

There may finally be a blessed stop to "What would you do with (fill in the blank) Mbyte of memory, anyway?" questions, now that the obvious answer becomes even more so: Fill it with programs and data that work intelligently with one another so as to further enlarge the universe of possible computer users.
To raise the intelligence of the computing environment, applications must be able to talk to one another, both demo- and autocratically.
By the way, in case you don't know: with this release of MultiFinder, holding down the Option key when invoking a DA opens it in the foreground application's world rather than MultiFinder's separate desk accessory layer-useful for various parasitic DAs (spelling checkers, macro engines, et al.).

Previously, the Mac could run only one program at a time, a real drain on productivity.
