Optical disc recorder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
SCSI recorders are less common and tend to be more expensive because of the cost of their interface chipsets and more complex SCSI connectors.
The recording speed of a drive is determined by the speed at which the spiral groove of the disc passes under its recording head.
CD recording on personal computers was originally a batch-oriented task in that it required specialised authoring software to create an "image" of the data to record, and to record it to disc in the one session.

MultiLevel Recording - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MultiLevel Recording (ML) was a technology developed by Calimetrics to increase the storage capacity of prerecorded and writable optical discs.
MultiLevel recording refers to the use of multiple reflectivity values to encode data onto an optical disc.
MultiLevel recording is sometimes confused with multi-layer storage, in which multiple data surfaces are combined into a single disc.

 IASA Cataloguing Rules
Record shops and some sound recording libraries and archives traditionally filed their collections of published sound recordings (discs) on the shelf according to size, label and catalogue number.
Multilevel description potentially provides scope to give more information about a recording than normally may be entered in a contents note.
Record labels are also bought and sold by companies, so that over time a particular label (and the recording rights associated with it) may pass through various ownerships.

IBM sets new disk-drive world record
IBM's approach to multilevel disks is to glue individual layers together into a stack with spacers providing a gap between the disks.
(Multilevel disks cannot be used in today's drives, however.) Multilevel disks could also accommodate future advances in areal density, such as blue lasers or high numerical-aperture lenses.
Although a few basic studies relating to multilevel optical storage have been conducted over the past decade or so, IBM's Almaden team is the first to present comprehensive test results of a potentially practical implementation.

The pits in a recordable disc are generally not indentations of the recording media as seen in the first micrograph of manufactured discs; but instead are optically obscure points that greatly reduce the laser reflectivity.
Where there is no transition between a pit or land, the reader records a 0 or a series of 0s depending on the length of time before the next transition.
MultiLevel recording modulates the laser to achieve 8 levels of disc reflectivity thereby increasing the bit density per square cm.

 IASA Cataloguing Rules
The opposite effect, to analytic description, however, is obtained with multilevel description which adds layers of information to a first level record representing a container or, more usually, a collection of containers.
Multilevel description is normally applied by archives and cataloguing agencies which prepare entries needing complete identification of both part and comprehensive whole in a single record, where the description of the whole is displayed as its primary element.
Thus the description of the content is effectively hierarchically embedded in the multilevel description, so reflecting the natural position (or ‘order of provenance ’) of the individual (or group of) recording(s) as created in the collection, or presented in a published compilation set of discs, etc.

The advantage of the video recording mode is that you get a better menu with a visual cue of the content--when you see the menu of what's on the disc, you get not only the title, but a preview scene.
MultiLevel CDs should be far cheaper than DVD recordable media as well--a few dollars per disc versus $20 for a DVD disc.

The MultiLevel Recording technology can be transferred to the DVD platform where it can provide the same speed and size levels.
We can see that CLV recording is implemented in each zone, and thus, it maintains high stability and recording quality.
The major problem for the move to higher speeds is that the PCA (Power Calibration Area) is not acceptable for speeds higher than 24x, and it is necessary to provide extrapolation for operation on inner diameters of a disc.

 Calimetrics, Inc. - IPIRA
In the early 1990s, UC Berkeley biophysics doctoral students Michael O'Neill and Terrence Wong, under the guidance of their professor Allan Bearden, developed a laser measurement innovation that led to the foundation of Calimetrics, Inc. in 1994 and to the subsequent development of ML (MultiLevel) Recording for optical data storage systems.
Recording: Unlike conventional binary recording, ML Recording allows data to be stored in marks (or pits) of multiple levels of reflectivity, thereby increasing data density on the surface of read-only, recordable, or rewriteable optical discs.
Calimetrics implements ML Recording using "add-on" semiconductor and proprietary disc media technology to enable significant increases in capacity, speed, and content security for CD, DVD, and next-generation optical data storage systems.
