Multi-link suspension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A multi-link suspension is a type of vehicle suspension design typically used in independent suspensions, using three or more lateral arms, and one or more longitudinal arms.
On a front suspension one of the lateral arms is replaced by the tie-rod, which connects the rack or steering box to the wheel hub.
A side note to the use of multi-link suspension in desert racing, the use of a good sway bar is needed to counter body roll.

The Infiniti G20's multi-link beam rear suspension (the same suspension that resides in the rear of the Sentra and Maxima).
On a double wishbone suspension, the wheel is held by a hub that is attached to the car with an upper link and a lower link (these links are sometimes called wishbones because of their shape), with the upper link being shorter than the lower link.
The result is increasing negative camber as the suspension compresses, and therefore the wheel staying close to perpindicular to the ground as the body rolls.

 Tuning Linx - 2006 Lexus GS 450h
To the rear, an advanced multilink set-up with toe control arms and an aluminium rear axle carrier combines stiffer suspension component materials with a reduction in unsprung mass for excellent ride comfort with high cornering stability.
The utilisation of a multilink configuration facilitates the optimum balance of handling, stability and ride comfort: The upper arms contribute to a reduction in upward spring motion, the mid-arm contributes to reduced body roll, and the lower arm provides an improved anti-lift / anti-squat ratio.
The Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system allows the driver to select the GS 450h's ride characteristics with a choice of two damper settings activated via a switch adjacent to the gear lever; "Normal" mode, for everyday driving comfort, and "Sport" mode, for improved body control and precise responses to steering input whilst cornering.

A much-improved suspension-strut-type axle is used at the front and a newly developed multilink axle is used at the rear.
The spread effected with the multilink suspension between a comfort-related, low longitudinal compliance characteristic and dynamically important high transversal rigidity takes on a special position in the face of the Golf's competitors.
In other words: with its new multilink suspension, the new Golf is laying down the benchmark in its class in the fields of handling dynamics, driving safety and driving comfort.

In addition to controlling both rear-wheel and body movement, the rear multilink suspension is also designed to accommodate the SH-AWD™ system's unique lateral and forward forces.
The design features squeeze-cast aluminum uprights (or "knuckles") to reduce unsprung weight for improved response, while trailing-arm mounts are positioned to reduce suspension squat during acceleration.
During testing, the suspension's coil springs, dampers and anti-roll bars received extensive tuning to achieve an ideal combination of superior ride and exceptional handling.

Dive is caused by a load transfer from the rear to the front suspension; this transfer occurs because the car's center of gravity, through which all inertial forces pass, is higher than its contact patches, the points where the braking forces are exerted on the ground.
A suspension element in which a reinforced shock absorber is used as one of the wheel's locating members, typically by solidly bolting the wheel hub to the bottom end of the strut.

Re: How do multilink automobile suspensions keep the wheel vertical to the road
Mulitlink suspensions don't necessarily keep the wheel perfectly vertical to the ground all of the time, but they certainly do a better job than swing axles (a la Corvair and the old Beetle) and they have other advantageous characteristics over solid axles.
This suspension has an additional link from the lower control arm to the vehicle.

The rear multilink suspension is a bit more stubborn vs. the front strut suspension, and the rear shocks may be a bit more difficult to take off.
Reassembaly of the rear shocks is a bit trickier than the front struts, since the rear suspension would "fight" your efforts to get it back together.
