Measuring improvement: Requirements for 1994: Use performance standards to establish a benchmark for improvement referred to as "adequate yearly progress." All LEAs and schools must meet the state's adequate yearly progress standard, for example, having 90 percent of their students performing at the proficient level in mathematics.
In passing the legislation, Congress increased the frequency with which states are to measure student achievement in mathematics and reading and added science as another subject.
For example, some states use assessments that include multiple-choice questions and other states include a mixture of multiple-choice questions and a limited number of questions that require students to write their response, such as an essay.

 CHAPTER 5
The findings indicate that in the experimental group, previous mathematics achievement, particularly those supported by technology were not a decisive factor in promoting better understanding in linear functions using spreadsheets and multiple representations.
It was observed that students, who used multiple representations and spreadsheets as part of their mathematics course, performed higher in achievement in mathematics (linear functions) at the end of the study that did the students in the control group.
The items of the attitudes scale toward mathematics were organized in two clusters: attitudes toward technology and its uses, and opinion or feelings toward mathematics as a subject.

We found that: (1) the multiple classifier system derived through the GA, Version 2, yielded the smallest training error rate in all experiments; (2) with Satimage and Forensic glasses data it also produced the smallest test error rate.

For many years, mathematics classrooms operated on the understanding that all students should receive the same thing at the same time in the same way.
In standards-based classrooms, students are encouraged to solve math problems with multiple strategies; assessment tools include portfolios, journals, teacher observation, and exams with multiple kinds of question structure; and students discover their own paths of understanding through group discussion, the use of manipulatives, and real-life problem solving scenarios.
She may then show the whole class the traditional algorithm and expect everyone to master that method as well (an equality model where students are all using the same strategy at the same time).

The AJHSME covers subject matter normally associated with the seventh and eighth grade mathematics curriculum and may be taken by all students in grades 8 and below.  The multiple-choice exam will take place November 17, 1998; high-scoring students will be invited to participate in the American High School Mathematics Exam.
Each February, 350,000 students nationwide participate in the AHSME, the first in a series of examinations that culminates in the International Mathematical Olympiad.  The AHSME is a 30-question, multiple-choice, calculators-allowed exam, to be completed in 90 minutes.
Approximately 160 of the top-scoring AHSME/AIME students (based on a weighted average) are invited to take the USAMO, a six-question, six-hour essay/proof examination, High scorers on the USAMO are invited to attend the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program, and the six highest scorers represent the U.S. at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

The main purpose of the American Mathematics Competitions is to spur interest in mathematics and to develop talent through solving challenging problems in a timed multiple-choice format.
The 75-minute competitions are 25-question multiple-choice examinations in secondary school mathematics containing problems that can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts.
The test is one in a series of examinations that culminate in participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the most prestigious and difficult secondary mathematics examination in the world.

Right at the beginning, he makes the point that even the quadratic reciprocity law should be understood in terms of algebraic number theory, and from then on he leads us on a wild ride through some very deep mathematics indeed as he surveys the attempts to understand and to extend the reciprocity law.

Amazon.com: Books: The Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory
This in turn has made superstring/M theory much more respectable in appearance, by patching any loopholes that appear with newer and higher orders of abstractions (as evidenced by appearance of the most anti-intuitive wild concepts like extra spacetime dimensions, parallel universes etc.), all of which were wrapped in the most exquisite and impenetrable mathematics.
As a purely mathematical theory, superstring/M theory may be able to stand on its own as an elegant and insightful theory which may even have applications in other exotic branches of mathematics.
A completely isolated theory in physics, however elegant and compelling it may be mathematically and aesthetically, is irrelevant and is doomed to suffer the fate of so many other fads and irrelevant theories in physics: to be forgotten in time.

Division (mathematics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, especially in elementary arithmetic, division is an arithmetic operation which is the inverse of multiplication.
This is the approach usually taken in mathematics.
Apart from division by zero being undefined, the quotient will not be an integer unless the dividend is an integer multiple of the divisor; for example 26 cannot be divided by 10 to give an integer.

Series (mathematics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In mathematics, a series is often represented as the sum of a sequence of terms.
Series for the expansion of sines and cosines, of multiple arcs in powers of the sine and cosine of the arc had been treated by Jakob Bernoulli (1702) and his brother Johann Bernoulli (1701) and still earlier by Viète.
Series may be finite, or infinite; in the first case they may be handled with elementary algebra, but infinite series require tools from mathematical analysis if they are to be applied in anything more than a tentative way.
