Tabbed document interface - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the area of graphical user interfaces, a tabbed document interface (TDI) is one that relies on tabbed panes to hold child windows.
This style of interface may work in conjunction with a full multiple document interface (MDI) or as an alternative.
One important advantage of the tabbed document interface is that it holds many different documents logically under the one window, instead of holding a large number of small child windows.

For any application that opens up multiple documents, there is the expectation that these documents will be contained within the application itself.
SDI or Single Document Interface is often used when the interface of an object or application can be expressed using a single primary window (a TextEditor) with secondary windows for supplemental tasks (a FontDialog).
Documents so initialized will automatically be constrained to our contentView and support complex MDI behavior.

MDI (Multiple Document Interface) is a Microsoft Windows programming interface for creating an application that enables users to work with multiple documents at the same time.
The user can see and work with different documents such as a spreadsheet, a text document, or a drawing space by simply moving the cursor from one space to another.
MDI applications can be used for a variety of purposes - for example, working on one document while referring to another document, viewing different presentations of the same information, viewing multiple Web sites at the same time, and any task that requires multiple reference points and work areas at the same time.

As a result, most applications display each document in a separate window, which users find familiar because it mirrors their experience with paper documents.
In this interface, the application has its own window, and its open documents may or may not be visible inside the client area of the application's window.

App Part 4: Multiple Document Interface
When it comes to the windows which actually display your document or whatever your program displays, you send a message to the MDI Client to tell it to create a new window of the type you've specified.
Since we're building on the last example, the code to size the MDI client is the same as the code to resize the edit control in the last example, that takes into account the size and position of the tool and status bars so they don't overlap the MDI client window.
If you have multiple types of child window, this is where you could put code to completely change the menu or toolbar or make alterations to other aspects of the program to reflect the actions and commands that are specific to the type of window being activated.
