Multiple Reentry vehicle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Multiple Reentry vehicle payload for a ballistic missile deploys multiple warheads in a pattern against a single target.
(As opposed to MIRV, which deploys multiple warheads against multiple targets.) The advantage of a MRV versus a single warhead is that the damage produced in the center of the pattern is far greater than the damage possible from any single warhead in the MRV cluster, this makes for an efficient area attack weapon.
The United States deployed an MRV payload on the Polaris A-3.

A multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle, or MIRV, is one of a collection of nuclear weapons carried on a single intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or a submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM).
The inputs to the navigation circuit are set by a general purpose computer according to a navigational input schedule loaded into the missile before launch.

Known as the Advanced Ballistic Reentry Vehicle, it could be delivered singly on a Minuteman III or in groups of ten on the larger Peacekeeper MX.
This vehicle would be coupled with an early-reentry decoy, which would remain viable down to the altitude at which the reentry vehicle could maneuver.
Vehicles that used reaction jets to maneuver were also considered, but design studies and wind tunnel data indicated that the simpler flap arrangement could perform all the maneuvers required.

By reentry time, the reentry vehicle (RV) has long since separated from its powered booster and is flying a more or less predictable path, although the shape of the RV, plus sophisticated techniques for moving its center of gravity, allow limited maneuvering capability for evasion of defenses or accurate target-seeking.

Multiple contractors were used to develop the Peacekeeper, but the primary coordinator for the program was Lockheed Martin.
With its Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicle (MIRV) warheads, powerful payload, extremely high accuracy, and modern penetration aids, the Peacekeeper is highly effective against multiple hardened targets, which is its main function.

Whether carrying a single nuclear warhead or a MRV -- Multiple Reentry Vehicle -- the strategic missile is one of the most fearsome weapons developed.
A single missile can eliminate a small city, and most likely kill the majority of the inhabitants of a large city through the lingering effects of radiation and fallout if they are not treated and removed from the area.
SLBMs, since their delivery vehicle can literally be driven up close in stealthy fashion (submarines are quite capable), can threaten any country in the world as well.
