Multitrack recording - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Multitrack recording ('multitracking' or just 'tracking' for short) is a method of sound recording that allows for the separate recording of multiple sound sources to create a cohesive whole.
Multitrack recording devices vary in their specifications, such as the number of simultaneous tracks available for recording at any one time; in the case of tape based systems this is limited by, among other factors, the physical size of the tape employed.
Multitrack recording allows a single musician to record multiple parts, allowing duos (such as Ween) and trios (such as Cream) to produce a larger sound, larger groups to double parts or add different instruments, and also a solo performer to create an ensemble sound, playing different parts.

Recording studio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Recording studios generally consist of three rooms: the studio itself, where the sound for the recording is created (often referred to as the "live room"), the control room, where the sound from the studio is recorded and manipulated, and the machine room, where noisier equipment that may interfere with the recording process is kept.
Recording studios are carefully designed around the principles of room acoustics to create a set of spaces with the acoustical properties required for recording sound with precision and accuracy.
Apple Macintosh hardware is most commonly found throughout the recording industry, however because many of these software applications are so much more reliant on the audio recording hardware than the computer they are running on, many of the computers used today are not as current as the average home computer.

Magnetic recording was demonstrated in principle as early as 1898 by Valdemar Poulsen in his telegraphone.
In more recent times, computers (digital audio workstation) have found an increasing role in the recording studio, as their use eases the tasks of cutting and looping, as well as allowing for instantaneous changes, such as duplication of parts, the addition of effects and the rearranging of parts of the recording.

 Multitrack recording with a computer
Record some analog audio tracks of your voice, acoustic piano, guitar, then add a drum track from your drum machine as a MIDI information track and then maybe use a control track to handle crescendo and fade outs.
When you press the record button, the computer is hurriedly sampling as much of the sound as it can (it doesn't actually get it all but it gets enough that you won't know the difference later, see Sampling), converting it into something you don't care about and writing to the disk.
In computer recording, the raw recording is magically channeled to a sub-program to produce the effect.

Additionally, multitrack recordings can also allow for different musical instruments to be recorded one at a time or together on separate tracks.
