  Audi Multitronic

 Audi multitronic
The multitronic is the first transmission of its kind not to pay the high price of poorer dynamism and economy for the added convenience it brings.
For example, Audi's technical specialists have modified the variator of the continuously variable transmission by adopting a new transmission element known as the link-plate chain, to handle the high forces and torques that are developed constantly by the six-cylinder engine with a peak torque of 280 Newton-metres.
The Audi A6 with multitronic accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h 1.3 seconds faster than with the geared automatic transmission, and is even one-tenth of a second faster from 0 to 100 km/h than an equivalent model driven with optimum use of the 5-speed gearbox.

500,000 Multitronic for Audi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The multitronic was first introduced in 1999 in the Audi A6 2.8, which developed a torque of 280 Nm and an output of 193 bhp.
Another strength of multitronic: this was the first time that a CVT transmission had managed to eliminate the "rubber band" effect.
The most important component of the multitronic is the link-plate chain produced by LuK which consists of 1,025 individual chain links and 150 cradle transmitting members.

Multitronic is one of the new continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) that promise to render the current crop of automatics obsolete.
In fact, the only downside to the multitronic CVT is that, for the foreseeable future, it's only available on the front-wheel-drive A6 (multitronic will also be available on the upcoming redesigned 2002 A4, but again only with front-wheel drive).
Audi's multitronic CVT transmission varies its ratios by continuously changing the diameter of the two pulleys that are driven by the multilink chain.

The basic idea behind Multitronic is similar to that of the Honda and Subaru CVTs we're familiar with: a metal vee belt running between a pair of pulleys whose diameters vary to change gear ratios.
Multitronic may not top manual performance, but it trumps the manual Quattro on fuel economy, according to the EPA (city/highway ratings of 19/27 mpg versus 18/25) and our observed mileage (22 versus 20).
Multitronic's efficiency and performance advantages pull strongly at the heartstrings of our stick-shifting techies, but if asked to predict whether this is the transmission of the future, we're betting that—except in smaller cars—it's not.

Multitronic is Audi's name for their new continuously variable transmission.
In 0-100 kph tests, the Multitronic is 1.3 seconds faster than a regular automatic transmission and.1 second faster than the manual gearbox.
Currently Audi is only using the Multitronic in front wheel drive applications but are looking at using it in their Quattro applications as well.

Another key element of the Multitronic system is its use of an electronically controlled multi-plate wet clutch rather than a torque converter.
All things considered, Multitronic is a relative featherweight, coming in 33 pounds (15 kilograms) lighter than the equivalent automatic transmission.

While Tiptronic is a genuinely good transmission, it cannot match the performance levels of Multitronic, which readily outperforms it in both acceleration and fuel economy.
With the exception of its previously mentioned torque limitations, the new Multitronic system offers superior performance levels while also retaining the option of an automatic option for those who choose to not choose their gears.

The big difference with the multitronic is that, for the first time, the gain in convenience is not at the expense of dynamism and operating economy.
In fact, quite the opposite: most of the data for an A4 with multitronic are actually superior to an otherwise identical vehicle with 5-speed manual gearbox.

Multitronic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Audi developed a new stepless transmission named Multitronic.
This new transmission is stepless because there is no gear change as exhibited on a modern automatic or manual transmission.
This transmission was based off of existing CVT but radically changed to transfer power better and reduce power loss even more.

The A4 Multitronic - which uses a continuously variable automatic transmission - is yet another example of its willingness to try new technology.
The multitronic is brilliant at picking the right engine speed to deliver the acceleration you want; if you prefer to make this choice yourself it also has a manual-shift feature with six defined ratios.
Audi's A4 multitronic is more efficient than a normal auto, but whether it will become more widespread in the future is debatable.

Claims by Audi that its unique new multitronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) can maintain performance, fuel economy and emissions at the same level as a manual equivalent have been substantiated by The Automobile Association.
The Audi A6 2.4 with multitronic transmission can accelerate to 62mph in 9.4 seconds (factory figure for five-speed manual version 9.3 seconds), reach a 137mph maximum speed (factory figure for five-speed manual version 139mph) and return 29.1mpg on the combined cycle (factory figure for five-speed manual version 28.3mpg).
Multitronic transmission is available now as an option costing #1,450 for most front-wheel-drive models in the A4 and A6 saloon and Avant ranges, with the remainder following in the near future.

The multitronic transmission is also lighter and more compact than almost any automatic.
In simplest terms, the multitronic solves the problem all transmissions have always had--designated gear ratios and in conventional automatic, pre-ordained shift points.
The experience of driving a car with multitronic is truly odd at first, with buttery smooth power delivery at all speeds and none of the buzziness we've experienced with other CVTs.

Audi is also the first to offer continuously variable multitronic transmission at this level, bringing the added convenience of an automatic without the penalties in performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions which are so often unavoidable.
One of the most notable is a modified variator, which incorporates a sophisticated new component known as a ‘link plate chain’ to handle the high level of torque developed by the latest Audi petrol and TDI engines.
Multitronic transmission is available for the majority of front-wheel-drive versions of the latest A6, the one exception being the 1.9 TDI 130.

With Multitronic, there is just one set of gears with a flexible belt, which looks something like chainmail.
When we drove the A6 on the autobahn and really took it for a ride, it had the odd tendency to sometimes slip lower in the engine speeds when you touched off the gas, yet there was no loss of power or speed.

Smoother than an automatic and more fuel-efficient than both manual and automatic, multitronic will be the most sophisticated and user-friendly gearbox ever experienced by Australian drivers - a transmission with the performance of a manual, the practicality of an automatic and none of the drawbacks of either.

I'd previously driven multitronic A4s and A6s in Germany and was extremely impressed with the technology's slick shifts and sporty character.

The only time you would feel something from the gearbox is if you press the accelerator pedal abruptly all the way to the kick-down switch, where the Multitronic chain jump to a smaller part of the cone gear, giving more of less the same impression as a kick-down with an auto box.
In a way I find this Multitronic gearbox absolutely fantastic, be it in full auto mode or in manual mode, but I have some reservations, not regarding the technology, which is brilliant, but how, in the long run I would react to this smoothness.
The Multitronic has hardly any of that, but on the other hand the gear changes are lightning fast, and there seems to be hardly any power loss as we have with torque converters, thus more like a manual gearbox.

In a front-wheel drive A4 like this one (the corresponding four-wheel drive quattro types have 177bhp to play with) the latest version of the 2.5-litre TDI has 160bhp on tap, but how much torque there is depends on what transmission is fitted.
Audi is quite correct in saying that its Multitronic transmission can cope with much higher torque figures than earlier CVTs, but there is a limit.
So there's strong mid-range performance to go with what is in a diesel context pretty sharp off-the-line acceleration, but one of the particularly appealing things about this engine is the combination of characteristic sound effects produced jointly by the diesel engine and the V6 layout.
