The Swansea and Mumbles Railway - the world's first railway service
The story of the "Mumbles Train", as it came to be known, is as heart breaking as it is fascinating.
The Mumbles terminus was extended to Swansea Bay lighthouse and an 835 ft. pier was constructed parallel with the lighthouse rocks as an incentive to attract even more passengers.
Travelling the "Mumbles Train" as it had now come to be known, was an enchanting experience; the combination of the smooth, fast electric trams and the panoramic bayside views provoked the illusion of gliding across water.

BBC - South West Wales Local History - The Mumbles
Mumbles is situated on the western edge of Swansea Bay, some five miles from Swansea in South Wales.
Today, the names Oystermouth and Mumbles seem to be used interchangeably and the three new parishes of Newton, Llwynderw and Oystermouth minister to the much expanded population of this same area.
However, Mumbles' main claim-to-fame is that from 1807 the line began to carry fare-paying passengers and thus became the very first passenger railway in the world.

 MUMBLES
As exiting as this must have been, these early rail travellers are sure to have a felt a twinge of disappointment upon arrival at Mumbles Beach, as it would have been immediately obvious that the area had no entertainment complex.
Shamefully, it would take more than ninety years for this to be put right; Mumbles Pier eventually opened in 1898, constructed specifically as a terminus for the Swansea to Mumbles Railway.
Others still are here for the ‘Mumbles Mile’, a fantastically compressed stretch of assorted juicers and watering-holes – sadly now down to sixteen boozers, from a high of twenty-two.

Clark Terry launched his "Mumbles" routine (where he delivered semi-coherent vocals interspersed with scat) with two numbers on a studio date for Verve led by Oscar Peterson; this Mainstream LP finds him expanding the concept to album length, with mixed success.
Although Terry has continued his now familiar routine into his eighties, it is better heard in small doses, so this long unavailable record is likely to be of more interest to the most fanatical collectors of Clark Terry's music.
