Mumford has his own secrets and demons but despite that he's pretty good at what he does and all of his patients go away satisfied and on their way to recovery.
This is an odd little movie about a psychologist-pretender named Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean) who hits on a small town also named Mumford and goes about his business treating the needy people who live there.
Loren Dean as Dr. Mumford has an strangely satisfying quality about him: he manages aloofness and sympathy/empathy at the same time.

 Movie (Metro Times Detroit)
Throughout Mumford, Kasdan studiously avoids exposing any real pain, and even skirts the film’s central issue: the psychological damage done when trust is placed in the wrong hands.
Mumford has some colorful patients with deep-seated problems, but the film never looks beyond their surface symptoms.
In the four months since he arrived in the small, scenic town of Mumford, an enigmatic psychologist whose name happens to be Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean) has acquired more patients than the other two local shrinks combined.

 Mumford . Nashville Scene . 10-11-99
Second, the skeleton in Mumford's closet is so jarring that it might lead you to believe that the whole film is about that skeleton, and though that may have been the intention of those loose-lipped commercials (to play up the film's wacky comedy angle), announcing such a bold-faced premise actually does Kasdan's work a disservice.
The people of Mumford are largely trapped by consumerist dreams--a shared desire to find happiness through the acquisition of products, styles, and mass-media images.
And just when his professional ethics can't slip any lower, Mumford floors his wealthy friend by confiding a remarkable secret of his own.

This comedy from director Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill) is about young psychologist Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean) who curiously lives in the town of the same name and who helps a small town of misfits realize their potential while creating conflicts in his own life.
A notable cast (Jane Adams, Ted Danson, Hope Davis, Pruitt Taylor Vince) highlight the film, and several well-chosen musicians contribute memorable tunes to the film's score.

Mumford is engaging because the characters and dialogue provide a delicate blend of realism and entertainment.
Mumford reminded me how nice it is to forget yourself in the midst of a good story – Lawrence Kasdan’s (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon) latest charm will keep you grinning.
The adult content in the film (nudity, language) could have easily been omitted and felt contrived to elicit an R rating, but all in all, this was quite an enjoyable experience.

Mumford is a film about a "psychologist" who lives in a small idyllic town, and deals with his patients in a way that seems to annoy them but keeps them coming back.

SCREEN IT! ARTISTIC REVIEW: LOVE AND BASKETBALL
A well-acted and, for the most part, solidly constructed if not particularly spectacular tale, the film is appropriately presented in four quarters, starting with the dual protagonists' first meeting as competitive youngsters through the beginning of their late high school romance that closes out the first half.
Supporting performances are solid and range from Dennis Haysbert ("Random Hearts," "Love Field") as Quincy's flawed father to Alfre Woodard ("Mumford," "Down in the Delta") as Monica's stay at home mom and include Debbie Morgan (TV's "All My Children") and Harry J. Lennix ("Titus") as their respective spouses.
In addition, this is thankfully yet another film that portrays African-American characters as real people instead of falling prey to the "normal" black stereotypes usually found in the dumb, urban sex comedies and/or "gang-banger" films.

 Slit-Scan Video Artworks & Research
In traditional film photography, slit scan images are created by exposing film as it slides past a slit-shaped aperture.
Mumford created the images shown here through a process he calls "streak photography", in which a slit-scan-based image is constructed from multiple still images of an object on a slowly-rotating turntable.
Reinhart has worked with digital slit-scanning techniques on a variety of time-based and interactive projects, including a film co-produced with director Virgil Wildrich.

Tex Avery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Avery's style of directing broke the mold of ultra-realism established by Walt Disney, and encouraged animators to stretch the boundaries of the medium to do things in a cartoon that could not be done in the world of live-action film.
Avery, with the assistance of Clampett, Jones, and new associate director Frank Tashlin, laid the foundation for a style of animation that dethroned The Walt Disney Studio as the kings of animated short films, and created a legion of cartoon stars whose names still shine around the world today.
Schlesinger intervened, and edited the film so that the characters only fall of the cliff once.
