Muncie was dubbed Middletown after a team of sociologists, led by Robert and Helen Lynd, initiated a series of sociological studies in Muncie funded by the Rockefellers' Institute of Social and Religious Research.
Muncie made headlines during the 2003 National Day of Prayer when non-evangelical Christians, including Jews, Muslims and Unitarians were denied the opportunity to participate in with city officials in a pray sessions on the steps of the city hall.
