The estuary at Mundaka is choked with fine particulates, sand to you and I, the result of eons of relentless erosion, through which the river winds its inexorable way to the ocean.
The streets in Mundaka are a confusing mess of one-ways and alleys, but if you can navigate your way to the church parking lot in the middle of town overlooking the break and find a spot, consider yourself blessed.
Mundaka Surf Shop (00 34 94 687 67 21, e-mail: mundsurf@jet.es), just down the road from the overlook, has everything surf related you're likely to need.

Surf’s not up: competition cancelled after dredging destroys famous wave - [Sunday Herald]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Until now Mundaka, northeast of Bilbao, was one of the world’s 10 best surf spots, famous for the powerful and up to 200 feet long tunnel wave which broke at the mouth of the Guernica Estuary, the gateway to the Unesco-declared Urdaibai biosphere reserve.
Mundaka Surf Taldea has urged the town’s local authorities to take a stance to ensure the environment of the Urdaibai biosphere reserve is protected.
While some local residents at Mundaka seem unconcerned about the loss of the wave, many are clearly worried that a Basque government law of 1998 made to protect the Urdaibai biosphere has not been fully enforced.

The winter saw only two good days, and the normally supershallow peak is buried under 12 feet of water.

Both are now best accessible in the Bibliotheca Indica, where Dr. Roer has published the text, the commentary by Sankara, a gloss by Ânandagñâna, and an English translation with notes.
The title is all the more strange because Mundaka, in its commonest acceptation, is used as a term of reproach for Buddhist mendicants, who are called 'Shavelings,' in opposition to the Brâhmans, who dress their hair carefully, and often display by its peculiar arrangement either their family or their rank.
Yet, for that very reason, it seems impossible that this should be the origin of the name, unless we suppose that it was the work of a man who was, in one sense, a Mundaka, and yet faithful to the Brahmanic law.
