Munich (German München) is the state capital of the Bundesland Bavaria in Germany and, behind Berlin and Hamburg, Germany's third largest city with a population of about 1.21 million (as of 2001).
In 1938, the Munich Agreement was signed in the city, ceding the Sudetenland, previously a part of Czechoslovakia, to Germany, which was signed by representatives of Germany, Italy, France and Britain.
Munich was the city where the White Rose (German: Die Weiße Rose), a group of students that formed a resistance movement from June 1942 to February 1943, was based.

The Munich Agreement was an agreement regarding the Sudetenland Crisis between the major powers of Europe after a conference held in Munich in Germany in 1938 and signed on September 29.
The phrase Munich betrayal is also frequently used, especially because of the military alliances between Czechoslovakia and France and between France and Britain, that were not taken into account.
With Sudetenland gone to Germany and later the area of Cieszyn Silesia retaken by Poland (the disputed area West of Olza river, so called Zaolzie - 906 km², 258,000 inhabitants), Czecho-Slovakia (as the state was now renamed) lost its border defenses with Germany and without them its independence became more nominal than real.
