Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra is one of three great orchestras in the city of Munich, along with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian State Opera orchestra.
The orchestra was founded in Munich in 1893 by Franz Kaim, son of a piano manufacturer, as the Kaim Orchestra.
During this period the orchestra was the subject of embarrassing publicity and lawsuits regarding its discriminatory treatment of a female trombonist [2].

Mozart, Berg, Tchaikovsky: Munich Philharmonic Orchestra/James Levine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The Munich Philharmonic, of which Levine has been chief conductor since 1999, is probably an even less frequent visitor to these shores.
To hear this great orchestra under one of the most charismatic of conductors persuaded me that Levine is indeed one of the finest conductors working today, an opinion that I suspect is not shared by many.
The Munich Philharmonic responded magnificently - strings were extraordinarily velvety (particularly basses placed on the far left of the stage) as were violas and cellos which emerged from the centre of the orchestra like lava erupting from the neck of a volcano.

The composition was performed in January 1957 by the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Mennerich.
Afterwards, the Munich Philharmonic purchased another one of his compositions which was Tüzün's fifth orchestral work "Humoresque." The name of this composition which drew great interest in Germany was later changed to "Nasreddin Hodja'.
The orchestra was conducted by the composer himself and the chorus by Nurettin Sevin.

 Carnegie Hall: Munich Philharmonic Orchestra
In the slow opening movement one immediately noted the orchestra’s distinctive timbre, a pleasantly antique sound of resinous winds and tarnished bells that set the Mahlerian mood (a pleasant contrast to the shiny new esthetic of an orchestra like the Chicago Symphony).
The orchestra’s dominant tendency was to play loud and heartily, with more enthusiasm than wit.
The general conclusion seemed to be that the Munich is an earnest young group who pose no immediate threat to the Berlin Phil, Concertgebouw, or the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Celibidache: The Last of the Mad Genius Conductors?
By and large they do, and where his performances fail (as in the Beethoven symphonies), it's useful to keep in mind the fact that the old man himself never would have permitted them to be released in the first place.
But beyond the issue of Celibidache's intentions, there is the Munich Philharmonic to consider.
These recordings belong equally to the orchestra, and even if they only demonstrated the players' dedication to their eccentric conductor, these discs would be worth hearing.

Munchner Philharmoniker (Symphony Orchestra) - Short Biography
Münchner Philharmoniker (The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1893 as a private initiative of the philologist Franz Kaim, son of a piano manufacturer near Stuttgart.
Following the Orchestra’s triumphant guest appearance in Vienna on March 1, 1898, with Anton Bruckner’s Fifth Symphony, the then conductor and Bruckner’s pupil Ferdinand Löwe organised the first large-scale Bruckner Festival and thus founded the Bruckner tradition, which the Orchestra has maintained till this day.
The Orchestra does not only enjoy great acclaim in its home city Munich and Germany itself, but has toured Europe, North and South America, Canada, Russia and the Far East with performances of the highest excellence.

BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No. 1, Variations on a Theme by Handel - Bruno-Leonardo Gelber/Munich Philharmonic Orchestra ...
This was, for a while, one of the glories of the mid 60s, a performance of Brahms' titanic first Piano Concerto that presented a young pianist with immense musical and technical chops playing another young lion's first major orchestral calling card, not to mention providing a stern audiophile test for systems at the time.
The musical impact is enhanced by the orchestral accompaniment which, although the Munich Philharmonic was not the most polished ensemble, comes across with deep conviction and obvious admiration for the soloist.
It is also as a demonstration of the quality of mid 60s sound an extremely impressive document, its wide dynamic range on a large soundstage producing a stream of dazzling sound pictures.
