Zapata was born to Gabriel Zapata and Cleofas Salazar in the small central state of Morelos, in the village of Anenecuilco (modern-day Ayala municipality).
Instead the chiefs in Morelos sent a delegation to present the Plan de Ayala for consideration and observe the state of the convention.
However in the folklore of the people of Morelos it is a widespread belief that Zapata did not die, but that instead the dead body was that of friend posing as Zapata, and that Zapata fled to some foreign land where much later he died of old age.
