Murchison, was taken to the penitentiary at Columbus but tunneled out and made his escape at Chicago, got command of another body of troops and while on active duty was killed at Greenville, Tennessee.
Murchison has had the usual interesting and exciting western experiences of the frontiersman, who was locating on the broad prairies of Texas found that he must not only meet the hardships and privations of frontier life but that he was always menaced by Indian outbreaks.

This river appears to be the Irwin River of Captain Grey, as this spot is only one and a half miles to the south of the position assigned to it on Arrowsmith's map of this part of the coast.
In addition to the fish and game formerly observed on this part of the river, we met with large flocks of the gallinule, which have for so many years excited the curiosity of the colonists as to their habitat; from subsequent observations it is evident they come from much further to the north-eastward.
The bed of the river had gradually become more rocky as we ascended, gneiss with quartz dykes passing through it and yielding a large quantity of salt, rendered the running water of the river scarcely drinkable; the only fresh water was found in the back channels filled by the late inundations.

Kalbarri is a human ghetto, a tiny cavity inside the mouth of nature, pinned to the entrance of the Murchison River by the 183,000-hectare Kalbarri National Park that surrounds it entirely.
Follow this river to its source and you'd run an obstacle course to the desert fringe near Meekatharra, but I was not planning to follow it so far.
The next morning the Murchison was a sheen of flawless reflection, inviting me to linger, perhaps even to continue downstream after all.

The river had risen 3-4 metres by the end of the first week, by 7 metres at its peak during the second week, falling to 3-4 metres again by the end of the third week.
Since the river was at a dangerously high level we decided that on Saturday we would paddle from Fourways (this is at the downstream end of the Z-Bend) down to the loop, a distance of about 20 kilometres.
Since it appeared that the river had in fact peaked on Thursday and was now in retreat we decided that we should attempt the BIG stuff on Sunday, with a paddle from Ross Graham Lookout down to Fourways, a distance of 28 kilometres, including the famed Z-Bend section.

The selected CP is located just north of the Murchison River on Berringarra Station approximately 195km by road north east of the Murchison Settlement.
However the CP was not located in the usual open rangeland country of the Murchison area but in a flood plain area of the Murchison River densely vegetated with mainly acacia species and knee high grasses.
This confluence point is located north of the main channel of the Murchison River which breaks into several channels in this area and during rain events these overflow and flood a large area of land.

Beautiful little place at the mouth of the Murchison River where it flows into the sea.
Then sat on cool, geen grass in park overlooking river mouth and watched flock of galahs feeding nearby and had fish and chips for lunch (very good, too).
The area is blessed with magnificent scenery, from coastal headlands overlooking the Indian Ocean to lookouts over the Murchison River gorges, and the gorges themselves.

The loop is an area where path the Murchison river forms a loop shape.
There is a track that goes down to the river, and around the loop, but being alone and with changeable weather I didn't try to follow it.
I assume the river forms a Z shape here, but I didn't go far enough to actually see the second bend.

We then turned onto a track leading generally south toward the Murchison River for a distance of 3.93km where the track petered out at a fence line 14.8km from the Murchison Settlement arriving at this point at 1450 hours.
On placing the GPS on the ground it fluctuated between zero and 1 metre however the coordinates remained at exactly 27 degrees S 116 degrees E. This confluence is located on the northern edge of a second claypan and 223 metres north of the Murchison River.
After taking the necessary photographs we walked on to the river where we found large pools both north east and south west of the place we intersected the river which at that point had a moderate flow.
