In this adaptation of Farewell, My Lovely, Powell's cynical, smart-talking private eye is hired by a dim ex-con (pug-nosed Mike Mazurki) to find his girl Velma, and by the prissy stooge of a flmail victim to babysit him during a handoff.
Powell does a wonderful job in the role, presenting a relatively calm, cool, and collected figure, sharp as a tack and yet underestimated by many (which tends to work to his advantage), always handy with just the appropriate glib remark, and possessing a dogged determination to see things through, no matter the dangers that arise.
Some of my favorite parts involve the character's narrative, as it generally includes some of the best lines from the film, the most memorable for me being early on when Marlowe was gathering information on Velma, the woman whom Moose had asked him to find.

The title was changed to "Murder, My Sweet" for American release, because the studio felt that Chandler's title might confuse Dick Powell fans into thinking the movie was a musical, as Powell had made a career up to this point of singing in musical comedies.
"Murder, My Sweet" is one of only a dozen or so private detective film noirs, and it adheres to some private eye and some film noir conventions.

DVD review of Murder, My Sweet - DVD Town   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
"Murder, My Sweet" is the second of three film adaptations of Chandler's 1940 detective novel, "Farewell, My Lovely." The first time it was brought to the screen, it was as a vehicle for the popular "Falcon" character in a movie titled "The Falcon Takes Over" (1942), with George Sanders.
For "Murder, My Sweet" the title was changed to ensure that audiences wouldn't confuse it with any of Powell's earlier musicals.
Hollywood noir films like "Murder, My Sweet" from the early-to-mid forties onward reflected a downbeat, post-World War II pessimism and were usually crime, gangster, or detective thrillers set in a big-city milieu of smoke, fog, night, and shadows.

My favorite scene in that regard is one of the earliest, when Marlowe is "relaxing" in his office under the repetitive glare of a flashing neon sign.
Murder, My Sweet has violence, and it has scornful exchanges, but they are handled with a measure of abstract decorum that allows us to relax.
Murder, My Sweet is thereby one of the most accessible film noirs ever made.

In typical film noir fashion, Murder, My Sweet (1944) opens with a flashback as detective Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) sits beneath a police station's hot lamp and recounts the convoluted story of two women, a jade necklace and multiple murders.
Murder, My Sweet was originally delivered to theaters as Farewell, My Lovely, the original title of Chandler's 1940 novel.
But Murder, My Sweet is still considered the penultimate version and is deeply indebted to Dmytryk's atmospheric lensing and improvisational touches.

When it comes to Murder, My Sweet, the 1944 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's pulp novel Farewell, My Lovely, it not only sticks, it clings like the shimmery fl dress on the gorgeous gams of a dame with a revolver aimed at your belly.
The term "film noir" was first used by French critic Nino Frank in a 1946 essay in which he singled out Murder, My Sweet and Double Indemnity as quintessential, defining examples of the form.
If you're a fan of the form you'll also recognize it as a seminal influence that remains entertaining, like a shot of first-rate hooch on a dark night, with the staccato patter of rain on the office window, then she walks in....

He did that no more successfully than with RKO Pictures in Murder, My Sweet, where he played rumpled, smart-mouthed, beat-up detective Philip Marlowe, whose tough perseverance went beyond any loyalty to client or any financial reward.
Many of his films seem to reveal a naïve faith in the common man, “a deep reverence for American ideals” and optimism toward the goodness of human nature that “defuses dramatic conflict.” Murder, My Sweet must be considered an exception to this trend with its deep-seated cynicism about social corruption.
So after the film initially flopped, in March of 1945 the studio re-released the film in New York as Murder, My Sweet so there would be no ambiguity about the plotline or tone.
