I liken the band to an orchestra because each member seems to be an individual composer, producing a complex musical masterpiece of his or her own that comes together all at once to create the sound of a single, never-ending stream of musical genius.
Murder By Death’s set was an invigorating one that constantly built upon momentum, each musician feeling where to take the music, higher and higher until a climax was reached.
Members of the band are almost violent in the way they perform, as if they are chained down by musical convention and need to break those chains through their sounds.

Rather than whipping the dying horse that’s the cabaret-punk format, Murder By Death juggles a dark, moody and frequently orchestral take on the style that’s as indebted to Johnny Cash and Nick Cave as gypsy caravans, Weimar-era girlie shows or a handful of Decemberists albums.
Murder By Death strains its influences and mixes things up enough to occasionally hit on a sound with a lot of promise.
In “Sometimes the Line Walks You,” Murder By Death doesn’t attempt to hide its country roots, delivering an alt-country number with the piss and vinegar of punk, and the cellos of “One More Notch” find a creepy-crawly neutral zone between Southern Gothic alt-country and orchestral punk.
