Robert McCartney (murder victim) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Robert McCartney was involved in a fight in a bar — Magennis's — in May Street, in the centre of Belfast, on the night of January 30, 2005.
McCartney's family were among those who publicly stated their belief that Provisional IRA members were responsible for the silence surrounding the murder, with his sister saying, "their cover-up and their clean-up operation afterwards was meticulous." The IRA expelled three members some weeks later.
The murder and its aftermath resulted in a strong backlash against the IRA in the Short Strand, a nationalist enclave in an overwhelmingly unionist area.

Dail Debate (23/02/05) - McCartney Murder: Guilty parties must be brought to justice
The reality behind the seemingly sincere words of republican leaders is the screaming silence of the 50 witnesses who are terrified to speak out to bring the murderers to justice because of the intimidation coming from the very associates of those leaders, who say they want justice for the family of Robert McCartney.
I urge the community, in conjunction with the McCartney family, to convene its own independent mass meeting, give mass protection to the witnesses to this bestial murder, and mobilise community power to break the grip of intimidation and remove the killers from its midst by securing their trial and conviction.

THE BLANKET * Index: Current Articles
To put in to reports of an “IRA murder” into context is it fair to say that if a number of PSNI officers who were off duty were involved in a fight and murdered a man that the PSNI killed this man? Of course not.
Another problem in the aftermath of the murder is the way that opponents of Sinn Fein or/and used the murder as a political football and possibly exploiting the situation or indeed the family’s campaign for justice.
Any intimidation before the murder or indeed now in the campaign for justice is quite frankly sickening and should be condemned by everyone, in particular the disgraceful insults received by the women giving out leaflets last night (13/04/2005).
