Warrior Challenge. Gladiators. Warrior Profile | PBS
The Murmillo or "fish man" was immediately recognizable from his helmet's high crest - similar to the shape of a fish.
His name taken from the Greek word for "fish," the Murmillo originally did battle with the Hoplomachus or Samnite gladiators, in a match designed to replicate the rivalry between Greece and Rome.
The Murmillo was considered heavily armed only because of the large oblong shield that covered his legs.

 Murmillo
However, the pairing of murmillo and retiarius was quite a late development, and never as fixed as the pairing of secutor and retiarius, yet the murmillo was so-called even when his opponent was the thraex or hoplomachus, so it would seem the question still stands.
Unlike the thraex or hoplomachus, the murmillo, having the almost complete cover of the very large shield, the scutum, did not need the high, thigh length greaves that they wore—so long as there was sufficient overlap between the bottom of the shield and the top of the greave, his defence was maintained.
In common with most of the categories of gladiator, the torso of the murmillo was, as we have seen, exposed, and he wore the subligaria, the elaborate folded loincloth together with the balteus, the ostentatiously wide belt, often highly decorated...

Ludus Gladiatorius - Research and Study.
Generally the hoplomachus would be pitted against the Murmillo and later (mid 2nd Century AD onwards) the Thraex.
It is believed that the Murmillo was the preferred opponent because of the historical joke of Rome vs Greece that would have been played before the audience, time and politics though would have killed this joke and so the Thraex replaced the Murmillo and the joke died.
All of this being said the scutarii (large shield fighters) of which the Murmillo was one, were considered the favourites in contests against parmalari (small shield users).

Combat between the murmillo ('fish-fighter', so called from the logo on his helmet) and the thraex or hoplomachus was a standard favourite.
The murmillo had a large, oblong shield that covered his body from shoulder to calf; it afforded stout protection, but was very unwieldy.
So the murmillo and his opponent were comparably protected, but the size and weight of their shields would have called for different fighting techniques, contributing to the interest and suspense of the engagement.

MIRMILLO / MURMILLO "Fish Man" With just right arm protection and a non-visored helmet, these gladiators were relatively unprotected; but were still considered "heavy" fighters due to the large and heavy shield they carried.
The term of Mirmillo/Murmillo or Fish Man may have come from the fact that they were generally paired with the "Retarius" or Net Fighter who would attempt to catch his Fish Man opponent in his net and then stab him with his trident spear.
Note the smooth contours of the Secutor helmet that minimized its being snagged by the Retiarius' net, with whom the Secutor was usually paired.
