Burnett in particular is disillusioned with the official restriction and general inaction of combat flying over Bosnia, dreams of quitting and seriously bends rules.
Owen Wilson at times gives a spirited and energetic performance as Burnett but in the end he is defeated by the material and too often seems more like a character in search of a photo opportunity rather than a fugitive trying to hide.
The special effects have their spectacular moments but generally they too are overdone and if you leave after the F18 is downed you will have seen the best: the flight and missile avoidance sequence is superbly shot, digitally manipulated and edited into a very exciting segment.

Born in 1910, Burnett had graduated from Cornell University, and in 1938 was married and teaching English at Central Commercial High School in New York.
Burnett was able to assist some of his wife's Jewish relatives there, closing bank accounts, helping them to get money and possessions out of the country and to make arrangements to flee their homeland.
Burnett heard it for the first time in 1931 in a Cornell University fraternity house and, even though it was not a hit at the time, it was a song he enjoyed and a recording he played often while relaxing in a hammock.

In 1938, a struggling playwright and New York City high school teacher Murray Burnett and his wife went to Europe for the summer.
Burnett remarked to his wife, "This would make a great setting for a play." Several months later, back in New York, working with a collaborator, Burnett turned out a tidy little melodrama, a play called Everybody Comes to Rick's.
Burnett and Alison sold the movie rights to their play in Janurary 1942 for $20,000; but if they thought they'd escape rewrites by seeking refuge on a Warner Bros. sound stage, they were hopelessly naive.

Murray Burnett is just a little different than most everyone else in New York these dark days of 1940, as War dominates all aspects of Citizens lives from Newspapers and Billboards to Radio.
In Murray’s mind, some may characterize him as a “War Profiteer” for writing an anti-war play and selling the Movie rights for significant pieces of silver.
Murray hopes that the movie version of the play, which the Producers at Warner Brothers named “Casablanca”, will reinforce the absurdity of War and portray it for what it really is; an opportunity for powerful men to obtain more power.

 TCM ~ THE ESSENTIALS
Rick (Humphrey Bogart), the cynical café owner, refuses to take sides with any nationality, but when a former lover (Ingrid Bergman) and her new husband (Paul Henried) arrive in Casablanca, desperate for visas, he is drawn into a volatile web of political and romantic espionage.
Produced by Warner Bros. at the height of the Hollywood studio system, Casablanca embraced what is now known as "invisible style." Rather than dazzling the eye with eye-catching visuals and histrionic acting, it seduces the viewer by creating a seamless, lush universe that gradually envelops the audience.
It took no less than six writers to transform Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's un-produced play Everybody Comes to Rick's into Casablanca, taking a conventional exotic romance (patterned after Algiers (1938) and Only Angels Have Wings, 1939) and investing it with a subtle, richly-textured brand of drama all its own.

Optioned for some $20,000, then an unheard of sum for an unpublished play, Wallis immediately assigned a small group of writer's to adapt the property for the big screen.
