The median income for a household in the county is $36,996, and the median income for a family is $42,155.

Murray County was created from Cherokee County on Dec. 3, 1832 by an act of the General Assembly (Ga. Laws 1832, p.
However, the new county was not able to function as a county because of its size and the fact that Cherokee Indians still occupied portions of the land.
Murray, who served as Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives in 1825, was a candidate for Congress at the time of his death in 1832.

Murray would never be the same as new towns sprang up and old towns changed their names as the county boasted at least seven rail stops and new business were begun.
In the old county seat at Spring Place, several century old houses are preserved but the nationally famous landmark is the Chief Vann House, built in 1804 as the home of Cherokee chieftain, James Vann.
Overlooking Chatsworth and most of Murray County is beautiful Fort Mountain so named because of the old stone fort which encircles its summit.

MURRAY - a county in the N.N.W. part of Georgia, bordering on Tennessee, has an area of 600 square miles.
The Coosawattee river forms part of the southern boundary, the Connasauga traverses the county from N. to S., and unites with the other on the border, to form the Oostenaula; it is also drained by Holly, Sumach, Rocky, and Mill creeks.
In 1850 the county produced 518,745 bushels of corn; 56,588 of oats; 67,391 of sweet potatoes, and 159 bales of cotton.

On Dec. 27, 1842, the legislature authorized the county to levy a special tax to fund construction of a courthouse -- but it is not known if county officials implemented the law.
Murray County's first known courthouse was a two-story brick structure built in Spring Place in 1886 (see photo).
Chatsworth was designated county seat in 1913, and three years later work began there on a new two-story brick courthouse that continues in use today.

The Georgia Talc Co. was located east of Spring Place near the path of the railroad, and a railroad depot was built to serve the company.
In Aug. 1912, two-fifths of Murray County's voters signed a petition calling for a referendum to move the county seat to Chatsworth.
