Elston is in some ways a throwback to a truly kinder and gentler Ontario, when neighbors actually helped each other.

Murray Elston will likely be the next leader of the Liberal Party and the world will be an infinitesimally better place, but that may not be enough to put the Liberals back in power.

July 19, 2004 - In an opinion piece that appeared in the National Post last week, Murray Elston of the Canadian Nuclear Association attempted to paint a rosy picture of the performance of Ontario's nuclear reactors.
Elston did this by artfully cropping his statistics to exclude at least five (and possibly eight) of Ontario's shutdown nuclear units from his calculation of the nuclear system's average capacity factor for 2003.
Elston may not want to count shutdown nuclear plants that Ontario power consumers and taxpayers have poured billions of dollars into building and repairing, but these shutdown units have had a direct impact on Ontario's air quality by requiring the province to turn to dirty coal power as a stop-gap measure.

McLeod was one of six candidates for the position, and was widely regarded as the primary challenger to frontrunner Murray Elston.

With Bob Rae's NDP government being widely blamed for mishandling the major recession, McLeod's Liberals held a steady lead in the polls for most of the period from 1992 to 1995, and were generally expected to win the 1995 campaign.
