Murray really is an expert in a wide variety of fields and really does know what he's talking about when he launches into a discourse on any one of them.
Murray also has ideas about the foundations of quantum mechanics and the interpretations of quantum mechanics and cosmology which are interesting, which have influenced a lot of people.
Murray is doing the field a great service by lending his name in support of it, and championing the cause, and he's also doing a good job of articulating what the cause is.

Gell-Mann matrices - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gell-Mann matrices, named for Murray Gell-Mann, are one possible representation of the infinitesimal generators of the special unitary group called SU(3).
An important representation involves 3×3 matrices, because the group elements then act on complex vectors with 3 entries, ie, on the fundamental representation of the group.
These matrices form an useful representation for computations in the quark model, and, to a lesser extent, in quantum chromodynamics.

Murray Gell-Mann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of Gell-Mann's triumphs is the Gell-mann-Nishijima formula, which was, initially, a formula from empirical results, but was later explained by the quark model.
Gell-Mann and Abraham Pais were involved in explaining many puzzling aspects of the physics of these particles.
In 1961, this led him (and Kazuhiko Nishijima) to introduce a classification of elementary particles called hadrons (also independently proposed by Yuval Ne'eman at around the same time).
