Topic: Murray Kimber

  The Urban Highway Robber
Classic English poetry meets art deco in illustrator Murray Kimber's interpretation of Alfred Noyes's "The Highwayman." The poem is a romantic ballad that, though once required reading for most students, has lately fallen somewhat out of favour.
Kimber represents the "ribbon of moonlight" with a moonlit image of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Kimber updates the King's men with policemen who, clad in trenchcoats and fedoras and armed with rifles and machine guns, are the very picture of 1930s-era government men.

Illustrator Murray Kimber at Art Ark Gallery, Kelowna, BC Canada
Murray Kimber, a Nelson, B.C. based illustrator, was nominated for a 2005 Governor General's Literary Award in the category of Children's Illustration (English Language) for his interpretation of Alfred Noyes' classic poem The Highwayman.
In his interpretation Kimber tells an updated version of the story of a highway robber whose love for the local innkeeper's daughter and pursuit by the army of England's King George eventually collide in a tragic end for the young thief.
Kimber introduced an Indian motorcycle for the highwayman to ride instead of the original horse, turned the King's soldiers into FBI agents and used the cool, austere grandeur of the Manhattan skyline to set a dark, and foreboding tone throughout the art.

Murray frequently visits N’Diaye’s homeland for various projects and recordings, and recently recruited the alto player during one of his many visits to the African country of Senegal.
Murray was impressed enough to take him to America for the young alto player’s very first visit to the States, which as a matter of fact, started off with the six-night Iridium residency.
The instrumentation of the David Murray Octet has, for the most part, remained the same over the last two decades, though as previously mentioned the exclusion of Murray’s bass clarinet at least for that night was sorely missed.

The covers of these two books are instructive: Murray Kimber's Magritte-inspired drawing for Seeing Stars invokes modernism in its surrealist form, whereas Barbara Klunder's cover for The Fat Princess reminds us of a child's art.
Child art and surrealist art cohere in their free-floating images that work by a sort of visual incantation, an intertextual necessity that draws the reader into fiction that refuses to accept the definitions of genre, readership, or verisimilitude.
The story is familiar to readers of Young Adult fiction—troubled teenager from dysfunctional family finds capable adult to guide him through the rite of passage to maturity and understanding.

Each "ancient voice" is accompanied by compelling, sometimes weird, and often humorous illustrations by Murray Kimber.
Ares, nasty god of war, is portrayed on a flame-and smoke-spewing motorcycle, while, in one of Hovey's wittiest poems, "Aphrodite Talks About the Venus de Milo Behind Her Back," a haughty and busty Aphrodite in a hot pink sundress checks out the "marble girl" supposed to represent her.
Kimber's handsome, sometimes hard-edged mixed-media paintings have elements of cubism and surrealism and aptly suggest the larger-than-life and less-than-pleasant nature of the characters.

Giving voice to the cupbearer of the gods, Ganymede, we find a human pressed into an unwilling servitude to these vain and selfish deities.
But as beautiful as the sound of Hovey’s poetry is, it would be far less were it not accompanied by Murray Kimber’s artwork.
Sometimes anachronistically modern, other times brilliantly ancient, Kimber pushes readers beyond the words themselves into a realm of sights, sounds, and tastes that one rarely experiences from poetry alone.

In The Highwayman (Visions in Poetry) (Kids Can Press), Murray Kimber's gloriously dark illustrations place the protagonist and his beloved, "the landlord's fl-eyed daughter," into a film-noir New York.
Several of the pictures are sexy, and some are disturbing (it's one thing to read about the landlord's daughter being bound with a musket beneath her breast, quite another to see it).
