Perahia brings to life all the energy and creativity in what Schubert wrote.
Since Perahia's return to the concert stage five years ago, after two years of recovering from a hand injury, audiences have witnessed an astonishing new depth and maturity to his playing, especially in his critically acclaimed interpretations and recordings of Bach.

Murray Perahia: News, Reviews & Features - IMGArtists.com
Perahia seemed intent on reminding us that the Fourth Concerto [by Beethoven] is a masterpiece of the high Viennese Classical school.
Perahia plays and directs as though he has thought about every note in every part (he may well have done), but every note is so perfect in its placement, duration, tone and articulation, so perfectly true to the enrapturing spirit of the music, that nothing gives so much as a hint of dispassionate calculation."
Perahia's delicious keyboard arabesques, is possibly the most graceful account of this music on record… Conducting from the keyboard, he achieves a fine balance between modern pianism and the ornamental demands of Bach's idiom, his lightness of touch never compromising the piano's full range of expression."

classical music - andante - murray perahia turns a new page
Perahia plays Bach so naturally and satisfyingly that it's easy to imagine the composer himself playing the same way were he to sit down at a modern grand piano.
Perahia cleanly and dramatically articulated the French-style ouverture of the Partita No. 4, with its flourishes, trills and double-dotting; while not romanticized, the Allemande and Sarabande were filled with poignantly singing phrases, beguiling intimacy and a sense of deeply felt meditation.
Perahia made that impossible: at his fast tempo, the music acquired a breathless haste that served to remind us of the earlier terror.

 Murray Perahia Plays Schubert
Perahia's interpretation of these three sonatas seems to me to reflect a certain philosophy in which a sense of balance and an emphasis on the classical, as much as the romantic elements, assumes a certain importance.
Perahia sees each sonata as a whole, to be performed in a consistent way, and resists the temptation to exploit specific sections as independent vehicles for his virtuosity.
Perahia abstains from showy or unbalancing effects and leads the listener through a series of twelve movements played in a way that amounts almost to a treatise on the art of playing sonatas.

In the early ‘90s, a thumb injury sidelined pianist Murray Perahia; for consolation, he turned to the music of J.S. Bach.
Perahia has since recovered from his injury, but not from his fascination with the master; and he has turned mind and musicality to the task of recording Bach's keyboard works for Sony Classical.
Perahia prepared for the task by practicing the Goldberg Variations on a two-manual harpsichord, the instrument for which the piece was composed, which gave him some insight into the evolution and development of the piece.

Classical Net Review - Bach-Busoni/Mendelssohn/Schubert-Liszt - Songs Without Words
Perahia plays the Bach/Busoni with the clearest tone and the most connected line; comparisons with the bell-like playing of Dinu Lipatti are appropriate here.
Perahia ends the program with "Auf dem Wasser zu singen," "In der Ferne," "Ständchen," and "Erlkönig." His realization of Liszt's polyphonic effects in the first and third songs is both impressive and sensitive, and even his performance of the extraverted "Erlkönig" resists slam-bang effects.
For Perahia, the essence of his virtuosity is as much in what he withholds as in what he gives.

My critical benchmark has been Glenn Gould’s nearly complete set (also on Sony), but Murray Perahia’s collection (completed with this release) is almost in the same class, though his playing is completely different.
Perahia’s playing doesn’t have the same weight as Gould’s, and his phrases are shorter and clipped, a nod to period-instrument style that Gould never felt compelled to make.
Perahia’s tempos are less extreme, and the famous Largo in the Fifth Concerto doesn’t quite attain the emotional depths it does in Gould’s hands.

I have no hesitation at all in acclaiming Murray Perahia's recording of the Goldberg Variations as the finest on piano since Glenn Gould's pioneering version of the 1950s.
Perahia's isn't as obsessively linear a performance as Gould's, and even though he isn't quite as firmly focused on the bass line, he never sacrifices clarity for the sake of pianistic effect.
What makes Perahia so special, though, is his masterful application of the piano's tone colors and dynamic contrasts to Bach's music in a way that is at once personal and totally convincing.

Perahia's interpretation has grown tauter and less editorialized, yet somehow the music's anguish intensifies, especially in those extraordinary outbursts of chromatic runs.
In the C minor sonata, Perahia's scrupulously gauged crescendos, diminuendos, and scales approach Richter's unflappable, equally un-self-regarding virtuosity.
For all the richness and diversity of texture Perahia brings to the B-flat sonata's sprawling first movement, the mood is brusque and unsettled rather than otherworldly (à la Kempff and Lupu), abetted by the pianist's fleeter than usual basic tempo.
