He was born Maurice Woodward Ritter in Murvaul, Texas, the son of James Everett Ritter and Martha Elizabeth Matthews.
After graduating with honors, he entered the University of Texas at Austin; he studied pre-law, majored in government, political science and economics.
For his contribution to the recording industry, Tex Ritter has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6631 Hollywood Blvd. In 1980, he was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Murvaul, on Farm Road 10 and Murvaul Creek, eight miles south of Carthage in south central Panola County, was settled around the time of the Civil War.
In 1990 the reported population of Murvaul was 110, but it is unclear to which site the figures referred.

Panola County (J-8) is in northeastern Texas, bordered on the east by Louisiana, on the south by Shelby County, on the west by Rusk County, and on the north by Harrison County.
Some brought slaves with them to Texas; by 1846, according to local tax records, there were 574 slaves in the area.
On March 30, 1846, the Texas legislature established Panola County from parts of Shelby and Harrison counties.

Ritter's signature as a student at the University of Texas shows that he spelled his first name Woodard (not Woodward), and a delayed birth certificate filed in Panola County in 1942 also shows the spelling Woodard; however, all printed sources use the spelling Woodward.
He attended the University of Texas from 1922 to 1927, spending one year in the law school there, 1925-26; as a student he was influenced by J. Frank Dobie, Oscar J. Fox, and John A. Lomaxqqv-who encouraged his study of authentic cowboy songs.
