Tun Musa bin Hitam is a Malaysian politician and a former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, serving under Mahathir bin Mohamad.
These included being Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Member of the Board of UNESCO, Leader of the Commonwealth Observer Delegation to the Malawi general elections and Member of the Commonwealth Ministers Delegations to Nigeria, Pakistan, Fiji and Gambia.
Tan Sri Musa also led the Malaysian delegation to the UN Commission on Human Rights from 1993 to 1998 and was elected Chairman of the 52nd Session of the Commission in 1995.

Musa Hitam was forced to resign as deputy premier in 1987 after the shooting of pro-Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) villagers in Kampung Mamali.
Hitam was one of the major forces behind the 1987 ouster attempt against Mahathir by prince of Kelantan Tungku Razaleigh Hamza, who is now tipped as a potential candidate against either the prime minister or his deputy designate, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Musa Hitam is not currently a council member of the party.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Musa Hitam, who is a former deputy prime minister, said that there was a provision in the law for Suhakam to take action based on the merit of the case.
Suhakam chairman Tan Sri Musa Hitam told a press conference here after chairing a dialogue between Suhakam and NGOs yesterday that the commission only heard vaguely about the situation through the newspaper reports and had so far not received any formal tabling or submission on the case.
Musa said prior to having dialogue with the NGOs, he and other Suhakam officials had also, earlier in the morning, briefed the heads of government departments on the role and responsibilities of Suhakam.

Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chairman Musa Hitam today called on the organisers of the ‘Black 14' gathering tomorrow not to turn the event into an illegal assembly and at the same time urged police to “exercise restraint” in maintaining peace and public order.
In response to the prime minister’s criticism of the commission, Musa said he “fully appreciates it is the police and not Suhakam that is in charge of maintaining law and order”.
Musa explained that the decision by Suhakam to request the immediate release of the seven, and the charging of them in an open court, was made after lengthy and careful deliberation at a special meeting chaired by him immediately after the arrests.

Musa Hitam is the one who should take a back seat - not human rights.
If Musa is unable to discharge his duties under these new, trying times, he should take a back seat - or better still vacate his seat.
