Fly agarics contain muscimol and muscazone (in smaller amounts and less active than muscimol) both are CNS hallucinogens.
Ibotenic acid which is the principle agent of toggle-switch intoxication (which cause muscle spasms, flushing of the skin and drowsiness), and muscarine, a highly toxic alkaloid (muscarine content is extremely low, 0.0002% in fresh tissue) As the toadstools age the harmful toxins tend to increase, so younger caps are preferable for recreational use.
As the muscimol and muscazone are not metabolized by the body, this allowed the poor to enjoy the hallucinations.

 UNODC - Bulletin on Narcotics - 1970 Issue 4 - 004
Muscazone: This heterocyclic substituted glycine derivative is to date found only in the European fly-agaric (25).
In chemical reactions muscazone behaves differently from ibotenic acid, with which it is a structural isomer if water of crystallization is disregarded [ 31].
But, it cannot be completely excluded that muscazone is an artefact generated during extraction and processing of ibotenic acid.

The Hallucinogens Muscarine and Ibotenic Acid in the Middle Hindu Kush
It was not until 1964/65 that these compounds, called muscimol, muscazone, muscasophine, and ibotenic acid, were finally analyzed.
Muscimol, which is derived from ibotenic acid through dehydration and decarboxylation, is indeed psychoactive, though it is missing from the flesh of both the cap and stem.
Whether muscazone, whose presence in young caps is, for the most part, negligible, forms from ibotenic acid has not yet been demonstrated with any certainty.

Muscazone or (a)-amino -(2, 3H)-oxazolonyl-(5)-acetic acid [Eugster et al., 1965; Fritz et al., 1965; Good et al., 1965; Eugster, 1967; Reiner & Eugster, 1967; Eugster, 1968; Schultes and Hofmann, 1980].
Muscazone, finally, is found in all the species in very small quantities.
They could act (in respect to the Isoxazoles) by strengthening, modifying or act- ing directly on the structure responsible for the psychotropic effects, or, perhaps, by modulating some of their pharmaco- logical variables tied to the resorption or distribution.

They are found in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, and although it's listed as poisonous, has been used in shamanic and magical practices for the last 2,000 years at least (2,3,4).
Muscazone doesn't seem to have much of an effect, but muscimol appears to be the main reason for the intoxication (2).
Muscazone represents an extremely small portion of Fly Algaric.

 Pharmacology of Amanita muscaria
The primary active chemicals known in Amanita muscaria and A. pantherina are: Muscimol, Ibotenic Acid, Muscazone, and Muscarine.
While the levels of muscarine in A. muscaria are quite low (.002% -.003% by dry weight)5, some of the effects of A. muscaria are characteristic of cholinergic involvement.
Muscazone: Muscazone is also a possible breakdown product of Ibotenic Acid and Ott describes it as a possible "artifact of isolation procedures" which is "of dubious psychoactivity".

 Amanita muscaria: Definition and links.
The name "Fly Agaric" comes from its use as an insecticide - crushed in milk, but it is sometimes consumed for its psychopharmacological effects.
It contains a number of entheogenic constituents - ibotenic acid, muscimol, muscazone and muscarine, of which muscimol (3hydroxy-5-aminomethy-1 isoxazole) is the most significant.
Effects appear after 60 minutes or so, peak within three hours, but certain effects can last for up to ten hours.

The data available to estimate how much these compounds contribute to the psychoactive syndromes and psychological effects inducted by the Amanita muscaria are focused in two main research studies.
They could act (in respect to the Isoxazoles) by strengthening, modifying or acting directly on the structure responsible for the psychotropic effects, or, perhaps, by modulating some of their pharmacological variables tied to the resorption or distribution.

Furthermore, sundry other compounds were detected in the same species: acetylcholinc, choline, ibotenic acid, muscimole, agarine, muscazone, muscaridine and bufotenine; and even atropine, scopolamine and hyoscyamine were reported, probably erroneously, from chromatographic studies.
Muscazone, also an amino acid, is a pharmacologically less active principle in Amanita muscaria.
Inasmuch as ibotenic acid appears to be a precursor of muscazone as well as of muscimole, it is probable that the often reported variation in intoxication potential of the fly agaric may be due to fluctuations in the ratio between ibotenic acid and muscazone.

Conrad Eugster also studied intensively the chemistry of quinones, including the isolation and structure determination of caryopterone, cordeauxiaquinone, and the reactions of quinones with nucleophiles for the synthesis of annelated quinones.

Okay, for starters, Fly Agaric is the same thing as Amanita muscaria (Pagan's question left it ambiguous).
There's another one called Panther Caps or Amanita pantherina that has the same psychoactive compounds - ibotenic acid, muscimol and (less important) muscazone - but more of them.
Now these guys are somewhat toxic, but the other thing to keep in mind is that the Amanita genus has the species that cause 95 percent of all deaths from mushroom poisoning, so you damn well better know what species you're munching on.

If ibotenic acid decarboxylates and loses water, it becomes five times as potent, for it is then changed to muscimole.
Muscazone is found in lesser amount and is pharmacologically less active.
Could this Siberian tradition be allied to the cult of soma?
