Self-financed demo sessions were productive enough to warrant the release of the Safety EP in May. One of the tracks on the EP, "Bigger Stronger', earned the band excellent notices in the UK press.
In 2000, short tours with fellow newcomers Terris and Muse, and breakthrough UK hits with "Shiver", "Yellow" (number 4) and "Trouble" helped maintain the hype level prior to the release of their chart-topping debut album, Parachutes, in July.
They appeared at September's In The City showcase for unsigned bands, but a performance at London's Camden Falcon in December, where they were watched by influential journalist and Fierce Panda Records" co-founder Simon Williams, provided the band with their big breakthrough.

Fightstar - They Liked You Better When You Were Dead EP
They Liked You Better When You Were Dead is such a good debut EP that the fact Monsieur Simpson used to be part of a heinous crime against humanity's ears is an irrelevant piece of history that will soon be consigned to pub quizzes and trivia board games.
If you didn't know better you might think that Lost Like Tears In Rain was penned by Welsh emo princes Funeral For A Friend, while Amethyst brings Muse-like qualities to the table in creating a thoughtful slab of guitar-driven rock.
A crappy pop moment fleetingly threatens at the start of Mono but in truth this track is the centrepiece of the EP - a brooding slowie that builds into a swathing crescendo of weighty power chords and will have you reaching for the repeat button as soon as it's over.

 Yimwu & his Burnt Ones
Critics have embraced the recording, quoting, "Despite the 'evil-circus' sound (distorted vocals and all) the songs still come off as well-written and heart-felt", and are bleak, depressing piano-driven songs with extremely spare arrangements, Jamie McLane has a beautiful, understated voice, Sincere as all hell".
One track (The Devil is a Woman) from the EP was used as the soundtrack to a short film by Lance Rainier entitled Indianapolis.

Lead singer and guitarist Neil Marsh possesses a set of vocal chords not a million miles away from the aforementioned Buckley - rich and delicate, whilst at the same time capable of great surges of power - but crucially he manages an additional tonality and introspection that makes his voice quite individual.

In a Dark Time » Pound’s “Hugh Selwyn Mauberly”
The French line refers to Mauberley, by the way, not Pound (”EP”) himself: Mauberley, perhaps an alter ego, who has failed to resuscitate poetry in his half savage land (America), now has to be interred.
I’d assume poor Hugh, unlike the more celebrated Odysseus, though his cause was no less noble, faded from existence without ever wearing the Muse’s crown.
However, I don’t feel quite as badly about breaking up Pound’s “Hugh Selwyn Mauberly” because it’s already segmented by its very nature.

Featuring re-recorded versions of early singles tracks 'Last Rockers' and 'Young Blood' as well as a version of the 'Avon Calling' compilation track 'Nothing', the album also included a cover of Bob Dylan's 'The Times Are A-Changin' which the band later recorded with Beki's replacement Lia on the B-side of their 'You'll Never Know' single.
EMI's determination to transfer the band's Independent success to the National Charts paid immediate dividends when the single 'Out of Reach/Sterile/(So) What For The 80's (Z26) climbed to No. 68 in the UK Top 75, giving Vice Squad their one and only hit single.

But the band did record, and the best results were released, late in 1978, as Whirlywirld's self titled debut EP.
Whirlywirld would go on to play only 14 gigs in their entire career (Ollie recently reminded me), but the entity itself was obsessed with making music.

Today their influence can be heard in the likes of Radiohead and Muse, but during their short career Devoto's outfit were trailblazers who defined rather than followed fashion.
Magazine use the angular riffs of punk, the eerie synthetics of prog, and the fluid bass lines of soul to augment Howard Devoto's wry lyrics, which he delivers with deadpan precision.

Maybe DiFranco was taking a moment to muse over 1996-- the year she toured incessantly, recorded two full-length albums ("Dilate" and "The Past Didn't Go Anywhere" with folk singer Utah Phillips) and an EP of mixes, filled the pages of music, news and business magazines, graced the cover of Ms.
Several songs that sounded restrained on "Dilate" live up to their brazen potential on "Clip." "C'mon fucker don't be shy," DiFranco growls at a lover in "Shy." "Amazing Grace," which dragged on the studio version, sounds ethereal here, bolstered by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
For those unfamiliar with her music, if not her persona, "Living in Clip" is a perfect introduction to her powerfully sexy voice and dynamic onstage aura.
