On the 10th September 1992, their Royal Highnesses King Juan Carlos of Spain and Queen Sofía inaugurated the Reina Sofía National Museum Art Centre with a permanent collection which came to substitute the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art.
Perhaps it was the transferring of Picasso´s "Guernica" to the Reina Sofía for its permanent collection, which was the decisive milestone in it now being considered one of the most important contemporary art museums in the world.
The building which houses the collection was designed in the 18th century by the architect Francisco Sabatini to be built as a hospital, and which was later modified and extended on numerous occasions.

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) is the official name of Spain's national museum of 20th century art (informally shortened to the Museo Reina Sofía, Queen Sofia Museum, or simply The Sofia).
The museum was officially inaugurated on September 10, 1992 and is named for Queen Sofia of Spain.
It is located in Madrid, near the Atocha train and metro stations, at the southern end of the so-called Golden Triangle of Art (located along the Paseo del Prado and also comprising the Museo del Prado and the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza).

The Museo del Prado is one of the buildings constructed during the reign of Charles III as part of a grandiose building scheme designed to bestow upon Madrid a monumental urban space.

Over a decade later, in 1990 the Centro de Arte was renamed the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (MNCARS), and in 1992, Their Majesties King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia inaugurated the permanent collection of the Museo Nacional.

Once the San Carlos Hospital, the remodelling of this building began in 1981 and in 1986 the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía was inaugurated, becoming the principle location in Madrid for national and international exhibitions.
The permanent collection in the Reina Sofía is almost exclusively made up of Spanish art from the 20th century, with works by many of the most important artists (Picasso, Miró, Oteiza, Julio González, Tapies, Equipo Crónica, Gerardo Rueda) but with a notable absence of many others.

 El artista Richard Serra repondrá la escultura perdida por el Museo Reina Sofía | elmundo.es
MADRID.- El Museo Reina Sofía y el artista estadounidense Richard Serra han llegado a un acuerdo por el cual el escultor autoriza la reposición de las piezas de acero que conforman la escultura 'Equal-Parallel/Guernica-Bengasi', de 38 toneladas de peso y que en la actualidad está en paradero desconocido.
Según informa el Museo en una nota, la escultura resultante tendrá a todos los efectos la consideración de original, perteneciente como tal a la colección del Reina Sofía.
Según explicó el Reina Sofía cuando descubrió su pérdida, "esta obra, concebida específicamente para el Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, formó parte de la exposición 'Referencias: Un encuentro artístico en el tiempo', que tuvo lugar entre el 26 de mayo y el 15 de septiembre de 1986 en la sede del entonces Centro de Arte".
