Initiators of the project - Peter and Irene Ludwig and the State Russian Museum - intended to demonstrate the interrelations between Russian and Western art in the context of developments of the 20-th century.
Peter and Irene Ludwig made their first purchases of artworks in the early 1950-ies and succeeded in amassing the most important collection of the second half of the 20-th century.

Some quick thoughts on the Ludwig Museum, Cologne’s museum of modern art.
The Ludwig was a mixed bag for me. I did see some of my favourite Gerhard Richters - “48 Portraits”, “Nude Descending a Staircase” - which I had caught a few years back in New York and which I was grateful to have the chance to see again.
The Ludwig Museum is on Bischofsgartenstrasse 1 (near the Dom); open Tu-Su 10am-6pm.

The WMR is the oldest museum in Cologne.
Peter and Irene Ludwig owned the largest private collection of Pop Art outside of the United States and in 1976 donated it to the WMR.
The similarities in their individual style, such as the use of fl outlines, voluptuous physiques and the method in which cropped images are displayed in spatial relativity are fascinating knowing that their philosophies were polar opposites, with the skeptic Beckmann in juxtaposition to the optimistically visionary Léger.

Internationally known Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein will have his first one-man museum exhibition in the United States, opening at the Legion of Honor in the summer of 2004.
In late autumn 1988 the Austrian painter Gottfried Helnwein, who emigrated to the Rhineland, mounted a series of five meter high photo prints with children's faces along a one hundred meter long wall between the cathedral of Cologne and the Museum Ludwig.
As we were preparing his exhibition for the Lentos Art Museum together with Gottfried Helnwein, I was researching at the same time for a different project about Kokoschka.
