The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus near Vancouver, Canada, is one of the foremost museums of Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations culture.
The Museum and UBC lie in the University Endowment Lands, which are not officially part of the City of Vancouver.
The Museum contains several large Musqueam artifacts from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, rare because the Musqueam were one of the first Northwest Coast First Nations to be displaced and decimated by European settlement and diseases.

Once housed in a basement at the University of British Columbia, the UBC Museum of Anthropology (MOA) is now celebrating its 50th anniversary in a spectacular building designed by architect Arthur Erickson, overlooking mountains and the Strait of Georgia.

Michael Ames, former Director of the UBC Museum of Anthropology, died in Vancouver on February 20 after a long illness.
Under his leadership the UBC Museum of Anthropology was internationally recognized for its experimental approaches to educating people about the diversity of cultures and became Canada's largest teaching museum.
One of Dr. Ames’ major research interests was museology and he published widely on the democratization of museums and their role in promoting collaboration with and cultural empowerment of indigenous peoples.

 Metroblogging Vancouver: Get your own favourite sculpture!
The Museum of Anthropology had been on the to-do list on my refrigerator for nearly a year now, and, once inside, I regretted not having made it there sooner.
Titled simply "Bear", and sometimes referred to as "Haida Bear", this 1962 carving occupies a walkway crossing the main gallery of the museum, slightly to the left as you walk in.
Each time I walked by to look at it I discovered something new: the strength of the bear's back legs, his claws, his pointy teeth, and even the carved texture of his fur.

If you have access to the web you can log onto the UBC Museum of Anthropology website at www.moa.ubc.ca and check out the "Respect to Bill Reid Pole" virtual museum exhibit that is being launched on June 21st.
The "Respect to Bill Reid Pole" was a memorial totem pole that was raised on October 1, 2000 at the UBC Museum of Anthropology's outdoor sculpture complex to commemorate the life of world-renowned Haida carver Bill Reid.
Visit the Vancouver Aquarium and you will see his immense "Killer Whale" or take in his "The Raven and the First Men" at the UBC Museum of Anthropology.
